just wondering, because this morning i took my ever-growing list of ‘potential photographers’ and emailed them to check out the packages.
my reasoning was that i don’t want to get hooked on a certain photographer and then realize when i get engaged that they’re completely out of my budget.
have any of you called/email dream vendors to have an idea of what you could afford?

I did this with photographers as well. It was helpful because I was able to eliminate those that were out of budget and get a better feeling for the packages/options offered by photographers within our budget. The downside was that they ALL wanted to know our date before they sent me information. I let them know our tentative date, but said that it was not set in stone. Some were fine with that, but one dropped communication at that point, which made me a little bummed. I was a little frustrated that no one would give me the information without knowing my date, but I guess that is standard. I think I got scared off of looking at venues at that point. 😐
Good luck with your search!

I didn’t do it, but if you have a probable date, I don’t see anything wrong with it. The reason vendors want to know the date is because a lot of them have different prices, depending on the time of year.

we price checked everything once we picked out a ring. we are planners, and like to know what we’re getting into financially. but after we went ring shopping, i specifically asked if i could do this and he said yes, please do! we actually booked a venue before we were engaged because we got a great deal =p
but i agree with noritake22—we had two specific dates in mind (one in april 2011 and one in february 2011 which is what we ended up going with), because we couldnt get accurate quotes without a specific date. if you know a month you want, i would pick a date and say thats your date. if you end up going with them, you can always change the date once its set in store–that happens all the time, and usually if its the same month and same day of the week, it will be the same price.

i haven’t done it with photographers but i have done it for venues. i haven’t had any trouble getting quotes, usually i gave them a general idea of when i wanted to have the wedding since i’m not engaged yet, usually fall of whatever year.
