I’m struggling with this, too! My name now isn’t very common, and I’d be switching to Miller (how easy is that?). But I have always loved my last name and I’m used to it being on everything. I’m torn because I think I should take his last name and he REALLY wants me to take his last name, but I don’t really know how much I want to. Good thing I have 9 months to decide.

@whitwhit: I’m in the same situation. My last name is unique, and I love that people ask its origin. I’d be trading it for a fairly common, easy to pronounce name. Right now, I’m considering keeping my maiden name for professional use and taking his for our family. We’ll see 🙂

I’ll be going from a very Italian name that no one knows how to pronounce, to a German name with the same problem.  But the upside is i’m moving up the alphabet! And its also shorter haha.

I went back and forth about taking his name for a while, but I know it means a lot to him that I do.  And my grandma’s Maiden name is also my middle name (that I love) so I’ll always have that connection.

I didn’t take my DH’s last name. As a feminist, I didn’t think I should have to.

Darling Husband and I toyed with the idea of hyphenating both of our last names so we could be a unit, but it’s a hassle for a man to change his last name (or name, in general). So, we just unofficially refer to ourselves as Mr. and Mrs. R-S.

I’ll be taking FI’s name. Both of ours are French, but mine now is long and difficult to pronounce, whereas his is much more common – I’m excited! However, his is an unusual spelling of the more common name so I’ll likely be saying, “No, with TWO Ls” for the rest of my life.

@Moja Milosc: I’m greek; no one has ever been able to pronounce or spell my name correctly, so I guess I’m used to it  – and since I’m marrying a greek, I will most likely be helping people pronounce and spell my new name for the rest of my life…hahahhaha

@Moja Milosc: what’s funny is my grandmother’s maiden name is also Miller (no, Fiance and I are NOT related), so it will be weird being a Miller amongst other Millers, haha

I’m feeling similarly… my wedding is less than 2 weeks and just now it is bothering me a bit. I LOVE my last name… it’s unusual and I like that. I’m pretty much somehow related to anyone who shares my last name. Fortunately, I love FI’s last name… it is also fairly unusal and it’s pretty. I’m sad though to say goodbye to my last name. I want us to have the same last name though, so I guess I have to get over it.

I’m freaking out a little. I like his last name, and it’s easy enough to spell/pronounce. I just don’t want to give mine up. <3 I also don’t want to hypenate.

I love being someone’s Mrs. like Mr. and Mrs. Man’s First Last. BUT when it’s just MY First, and His Last… My name doesn’t sound as pretty :-(. It works, but obviously my parents worked hard to pick a name that sounded pretty with my last name. Oh well. I get Mr. Prince Charming!

Well of course changing’s one name because of marriage is a custom, not a law. The first two times I got married I did NOT change my name. I simply thought the custom strange. This time I am, I will doubtless have a hard time remembering the name change at first! However, for professional reasons, I am using my current last name as my middle name, in other words, I am changing my middle AND my last name this time!
