I attempted to have a productive weekend, but it didn’t go as well as I hoped :/

Interviewing and choosing vendors is a lot harder than I expected! How do you choose when you have so many important factors weighing in and you want it to be perfect?

We had 8 vendor interviews over the course of the weekend. We did book our photographer, and we are in the process of booking our DJ and florist. We want to conduct one more interview with a potential officiant before deciding on that one…

Anyone else? ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes! I’ve been planning up a storm lately. I’m actually kind of surprised since I usually procrastinate. I’m moving out of state at the end of next month though so I have motivation to get it done! This weekend I booked my photographer, dj, videographer, reserved a photo booth, took engagement photos, went dress shopping for the first time, and have scheduled meetings with two bakeries and four florists for the upcoming two weeks…. Now onto invite research! Phew!

Way to go girls!

I am kind of in a planning lull right now. I’ve got dress, venue/cater, bm dresses, photographer, and vieographer booked, and I have firm ideas about what I want flowers/decor, cake, invites, etc but I am waiting to do any more planning until we are under a year out

I’ll probably start looking for a florsit, cake baker, and DJ starting in july.

@radishtime:  I feel ya! Planning ahead of time has its perks, but when you start to figure a lot out, its like “What can I do now?” And unfortunately, a lot of it, you are forced to wait on until under a year out…

On a side note…has anyone else gotten that annoying response of “Oh, you have plenty of time…just enjoy being engaged…” to all of your planning? :/

My response is like, “uh, my idea of enjoying being engaged is planning the perfect wedding…without getting stressed out, which means getting everything done in a timely manner, which means not waiting til the last minute…” Haha. Sorry, mini rant!

@Miss Heirloom:  Yes, I totally get the same thing!

I am a student so I want to get lots of planning done on my breaks from school. Everyone always tells me that too. “Oh you have so much time!”

Yes, But I’d like to get all the wedding stuff out of the way NOW so that when I am focusing on my last semester of college and trying to find a job I don’t have to be trying to plan a wedding on top of it!

@radishtime:  Same here. I am in graduate school and in this upcoming year I will be working on my 80+ page thesis, job searching, and will be about an 8 hour drive away from my hometown/location of the wedding.

Everyone looks at me like I am crazy when I tell them the wedding is still 1 year+ away. But, whatever. Glad to know that there are other bees facing the same type of negative response to our early planning.

@jrzvol:  I know…I work about 30 hours a week (which pays for my Masters degree) and take 3 classes each semester…so its been pretty rough with time management. I am really going to try to knock out a lot this summer.

Wow great job ladies!!! Especially with all else going on in your lives (grad school!) I completely understand about getting things done sooner than later.  We’re moving out of state within 1-2 months (FI first then me) so we really need to start interviewing vendors and booking them ASAP. Our top priorities are photographer, DOC, hair / makeup before moving.  We are sooo behind on that =( I think everyone else we can book long distance and don’t need to meet in person. Correct me if I’m wrong…

We already booked the reception venue, picked out our wedding party, created a timeline of what needs to get done when, made our budget, and I am working with a local designer for my dress. Since my BMs are very eager (I have the best friends seriously!), the girls and I started looking at potential Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses (online only) this past weekend. Btw, LOVE LOVE LOVE Google Docs! I’m sharing a wedding planning one with Fiance, bridesmaids one with *surprise* the BMs (their budget, events like bridal shower, etc.), and a wedding attire one for info / voting on Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses and Groomsmen suits.

@Miss Heirloom: I’m getting married in SD too!  YAY =)  What vendors are you using? Are you having a wedding coordinator? Looking into Walter Wilson or iheartas (Aaron & Samantha) for photographers, Mike Pelky for DJ, and Mish Mucho or Makeup Artist on the Go for hair / makeup. I clearly need more leads LOL!

P.S. Hope the tagging worked. I have no idea how to tag a bee…

@lululime:  Hey! You just reply to their specific post by clicking on the reply link under their post, rather than commenting on the thread as a whole at the bottom.

Our wedding is taking place at Twin Oaks Garden Estate in San Marcos, so we are mostly North County based, but we did just get done interviewing vendors all over SD. Our venue only does one wedding a day (both ceremony and reception) and provides wedding coordination, which we LOVE! It makes everything so much easier since we have the venue for 10 hours on the day of the wedding and they set/clean everything up.

In fact, we actually just got done interviewing Aaron from A&S Photography and were not impressed. Aaron invited us into his home and has a cute family, but his personality was just kinda bleh…when talking to us, he acted really bored and not interested at all. His wife may be different though. We didn’t get to meet her. Hint: He will go down on his price by about a hundred if you mention that you have looked into other photographers who are charging you 100 less. At least, he did that for us when we mentioned it so he could be competitive with their rates.

We also interviewed Michael Lawrence Photography (you might want to check into him, he was our second choice!) and George Street Photography, whose photos we loved, but we didn’t like that we wouldn’t meet our actual photographer (just a consultant) until after we had booked.

I really wanted a photographer who could make me laugh and had a good vibe to him, so I felt comfortable in all of my photos. So, we ended up booking the recommended photographer from our venue, John Salgado. He is so awesome. He reminds me of the turtle from Finding Nemo. He also charges in the 1500 range.

For our other vendors, we are using DJ Herbie Smith from TreMedia (referral), Florist Jerri Disney (recommended vendor from venue), and Officiant Reverend Christopher Tuttle (recommended vendor from venue). I highly recommend Rev. Christopher, but this largely depends on where you are getting married and what type of ceremony you are having (in a church- religious, outside- non-religious, etc.). Catering, cake, and linens/tables/etc. is included with our venue.

Do you mind me asking where in SD you are getting married? Where did you look for Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses? We should share details and help each other plan!

We booked our cupcake bakery on Friday, then had our engagement party on Sunday, so that took up most of our time.  I just booked our bridal suite this morning though so I’m feeling productive!  ๐Ÿ™‚

@Miss Heirloom:  First off, your venue is beautiful!! We are having our reception at Admiral Kidd Club in Point Loma and hope to have the ceremony at Sunset Cliffs. They start booking on Monday for June 2013 so hope we get our spot!

Thank you for all the recommendations ๐Ÿ™‚ Good to know about Aaron from A&S. Photography is one of our top priorities and I completely agree about clicking with the photographer. We’ll check out Michael Lawrence and John Salgado and the other vendors you mentioned. We might have a family friend be our officiant but still deciding.

And I’d love to be planning buddies!! I’m thinking of getting the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses from Ann Taylor. They have great sales and the dresses are pretty! PM me whenever :))

@lululime:  Thank you! Honestly, I think I am more excited for the venue than anything else (even the dress!) Haha. Good luck on getting your ceremony location. Sunset Cliffs is gorgeous. I will definitely keep you posted and be sure to feel free to PM me whenever also!
