I have what I like to call “movie amnesia”. After a few weeks, I can hardly recall details of movies I’ve seen. It’s been like this since I was little. I often only remember a significant scene or two and the general idea of what happened, but not the details.
It drives SO crazy because I’ll walk in when he’s watching a movie and go “what is this?” and he’ll say “really? you don’t know?” and it will be a movie I’ve seen with him a few times, but don’t recognize. If I start watching, some of it will start to come back to me and it will seem familiar, but I might not remember how it ended.
If I see the name of a movie I’ve watched, I’ll remember that I watched it, but I might not recognize the actual movie if it’s playing on TV. I’ve always wondered if anyone else has the same issue? My memory is really good when it comes to other things, so it’s really strange that I can’t retain movies very well. Just a quirk I have, but there must be others with it!

@cafelatte: I totally suffer from this. If anyone asks me about a movie I turn to Fiance and go “did we watch that?” and “What was it about?”
Very often I will get three quarters of a way through a movie and all of a sudden the realisation will hit me that I’ve watched it!
I also only remember basic story lines and plots, never specific scenes!

Oh my god, this happens to me right after! I have to watch a movie more than once to remember anything more significant than the plotline and ending… unless it’s very memorable, which means it’s a good movie.
For a minute I thought someone had decided to make a movie out of the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Now THAT would be memorable! haha.

Yes! I do it with TV, too.
Darling Husband laughs at me, but I like it because I can rewatch crime shows like Bones or NCIS and not really remember what is going to happen. I sometimes remember the ending, but almost never how it got to there.
ETA – Oddly enough, it’s totally the opposite for books I read.

That’s pretty cool. Sounds like you could have a small stack of quality DVDs (you’d know right after watching one whether it was a “keeper” or to be donated/sold/whatever), and that small stack would be enough for endless entertainment 🙂
