Last year, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome. The doctor didn’t say a word about not being able to get pregnant, but in the past 6 months I’ve met two women who have PCOS and one had a really hard time TTC and the other can’t.
I don’t know how common that is, but from what I’ve seen on the ‘net, it seems to be a semi-common side effect? It’s had me a little worried lately. (Probably going to TTC at the end of 2011)
Dr. just prescribed me a new BC 2 months ago that is “supposed” to help with PCOS and it has worked for me! I still have occasional pain, but it has decreased significantly. That is encouraging, but synthetic hormones so not sure it’s curing anything?

They may have other complications. Each case is totally different, but one of the issues with PCOS can be that you’re not getting a period consistently, and sometimes the eggs that do “drop” aren’t fully mature and viable. In that case, you just kind of have less opportunities in a year to get pregnant, so it might take a little longer. Currently the BC pill helps me with a lot of symptoms, so that’s ok for now. My doctor advised me to come back before we start trying to have a baby and she will monitor the situation and figure out whether we’ll need the assistance of fertility medication at that time.
I hate to say it, but the Catch 22 of PCOS (causing weight gain/excessive weight making the condition worse) may be one of the main culprits?? Being over (or under) weight can be a major contributor in not being able to get pregnant even when there’s no other factors.

Thank you for your comments and the website!!
@SapphireSun.. I think that’s what’s so weird about my case. I’ve been taking BC for about 5 yrs but I had normal periods before. I am also probably average weight for my height, but I do have a couple of other symptoms — just not the main ones. So I kind of question the diagnosis sometimes.
I guess one of those things I will just deal with when the time comes! 🙂
