Literally all I can think of everytime I say the word fiance is that Seinfeld episode where that annoying lady keeps saying “My Fiance! My Fiance! I’ve lost my Fiance, the poor baby!” and Elaine says “Maybe the dingo ate your baby”.
It’s like I’m constantly worried that I sound like that annoying lady! It’s such a weird word, it just does not roll off my tongue well. Does it sound as weird to others as it does to me? Do I just call him my boyfriend, cause that doesn’t seem right either and I am proud and excited we’re engaged. He calls me wife sometimes, which TOTALLY freaks me out and I always end up flailing my arms around going NOT YET NOT YET!
I don’t know wtf to call him to other people! It’s easy enough to people that know him, I can just call him by his name, but otherwise, I’m at a loss!

“My Fiance! My Fiance! I’ve lost my Fiance, the poor baby!” and Elaine says “Maybe the dingo ate your baby”.
That always went through our head, too. We took to calling ourselves “Not boyfriend/girlfriend.” I hate the word Fiance. It’s so pretentious and snotty.

No. It’s just another language, which is not “weird” to me.

Love that Seinfeld episode. DH and I are always saying “the Dingo ate your baby”.

Yes. I donlt know why, but it sounds pretentious when it comes out of my mouth (maybe the frenchness of the word?). I don’t think I will have the same problem with “husband.” I’ve reverted back to calling him my “boyfriend” in the meanwhile.
Even on the bee, although I call him my FI here, I’m literally hearing in my head, “Eff Eye.” lol! I have written “fiance” here sometimes though. It doesn’t seem so pretentious on the bee. Maybe because I assume pretty much everyone here is in the same boat.

Not to me, but there have been other threads about this, so you’re not alone!

The funniest Seinfeld episode, and I think of it every time I hear the word Fiancé. I personally don’t use it, I can’t wait to start calling him husband. When I’m speaking about him to people who don’t know him if I refer to his name they won’t know who I’m talking about, so I just call him boyfriend for the time being.

@funkybutton: I feel the same way! I feel weird when I say, “My fiancé…” Sometimes with people I have just met I just want to say, “My boyfriend…” but I feel weird with that too since I do have a ring on my finger.

@funkybutton: nope not me but I never watched seinfield either. I was say I only got to call my DH Fiance for 3 weeks, but I like hubby better so its ok

Yup. Totally weird. But it’s also always been weird for me to say ‘boyfriend’, and I can’t even imagine saying ‘husband’…YIKES!

i havent seen the episode but i always hated seinfield.
i dont understand it being seeing as pretentious/snotty…to be it was the word to use after engagement. full stop.
its totally weird to call each other husband/wife if you arent married in my opinion. and bf/gf is just a bit high school-y and not reflecting the new commitment

I literally have to force myself to say it. It just doesnt come naturally to me.

Now in my head I think eff eye since joining this board.
FI and I call each other our “finance” as a joke, since the word looks similar and our phones usually autocorrect it to that.

I dont like it much either. Sometimes I joke around and call him my “husband-elect” or just “my guy”
some people also use “partner”
