There’s a pretty good South Beach cookbook you could buy or get from the library.

I can say that I found out I was allergic to gluten/wheat about 3 years ago and as soon as I stopped eating those high carb foods I lost about 15 lbs and kept it off! Also, I’ve tried the ‘paleo diet’ which is similar to atkins but you don’t get to eat fatty or salty foods either (it’s basically a fruit, lean meat, nuts and veggies diet…a little rough) and I lost weight fast on that when I needed to drop pounds while I was racing =)

I have a toooooon of low carb recipes because of my allergy, also try allrecipes.com, there is a whole section of low carb or good carb alternatives!!

After seeing pictures from my recent bridal shower, I’m not mortified with the way I look (close though!), but I feel like I could DEFINITELY benefit from something… working out or eating better or ::gasp:: both.

I’m seriously considering trying out low carb because I’ve heard such great things, but honestly  carbs are a staple in my diet. For mornings I often eat a whole wheat english muffin or oatmeal, lunches are generally sandwiches or fast food (bad, I know), and dinners vary, but we ALWAYS have starches.

My question to anyone that is doing/has done low carb… do you lose weight if you cut back or do you have to be really restrictive?

I have cut back my carb intake and it is really working for me.  I am healthily losing about 2 pounds a week and have yet to feel deprived.  I love love love carbs so I do allow myself one whole wheat english muffin per day.  I have it with a little peanut butter about two hours before going to the gym.

I think you would porbably lose more quickly by completly cutting out carbs but that is not realistic for me.  What I have done really is cut out the refined and processed foods.  I have found myself cooking more (which I really enjoy) and finding foods that I really like.  By making a flavorful meal and putting a little more thought into it, you don’t even miss the carby starchy stuff.  I definitly do not have time to cook during the week because I leave my house at 6am and don’t get home until 7:30/8 so I cook on Sundays and just reheat during the week.  I am a fan of this, it really has been working well for me.

the key is to only allow yourself complex carbs (like whole grains), and if the food pyramid says you need 6-11 servings of carbs a day (or whatever it says…it’s been years since i looked at it, lol), keep it at 6.  it’s sooooooo important to pay attention to your servings.  i lost about 20lb in 2.5 months just by keeping my caloric intake between 1300 and 1400/day, counting servings and keeping carbs low with veggies and lean proteins high (be careful with fruits, because they can be carb-y too), and 45-60min of cardio 4x a week.

diet and exercise go hand in hand.  neither will work well without the other.

Thanks for the input/tips everyone!

I think I’m going to jump on the low carb bandwagon and try it out. I hope that by being conscious of what I’m eating (i.e staying away from the ‘bad’ carbs), it will be helpful.  I’d LOVE to lose 10 pounds by the wedding.

Wow punkeyb – that’s amazing!  How many carbs are you allowing yourself each day?

I’m on day 4 of South Beach and the first 2 weeks are very low carb, the rest of the diet introduce them back progressively. It’s going pretty well but I miss my fruits and pasta. I just hope it will all be worth it in the end. I have my engagement pictures this July and I want to be down at least 30 pounds by my wedding.

Yeah, I’m on day 2.  A co-worker and I are doing a low carb diet togeter.  It’s basically the southbeach diet but I’m also eating low glycemic index fruits as well.  I already feel better.    We are doing this diet for 30 days.  The best part of our diet is we get one cheat day where we might have some whole grain carbs and maybe a low carb alcoholic drink.  I’m also working out 5-6 times a week with weight training and cardio.  I’ll keep you posted on my progess.  Good luck everyone on your weight loss progress!!

it’s always better to allow yourself a “cheat” day every so often…you’re less likely to kick the diet to the curb long-term if you get some reward every so often.  plus it keeps your metabolism up…being on a strict diet long-term like that (ESPECIALLY low-carb diets) slows your metabolism way down.
