How far along will you be when you buy it vs when the wedding is? I would think you could buy empire waist one size up with no problems! And also, you don’t have to pay them to alter it, ask a friend/relative or someone who is much cheaper than the bridal shop to alter your dress. I save $400 by using a lady my friend used instead of the bridal shop alterations lady. to be safe you could got two sizes up but three sizes seems unnecessary

DiamondnLovey:  How far along will you be and where did yall purchase the dresses? I bought an empire waisted dress for my brother’s wedding 6 years ago and it would have worked as a maternity dress. In fact, I have seen it on pregnant brides and one of the other BMs had just had a baby.

It looks like they have almost all sizes in truffle, which is a chocolate brown.

DiamondnLovey:  I have the same problem. Had to get a j crew dress, it’s empire waist but full length and I’m 5’9 so I went 2 sizes up and plan to have it taken in. It’s huge, but hopefully has enough fabric to accommodate my 8 month bump and still be long enough. I’m only three months now so I had no idea what to do size wise, hopefully I made the right decision!

DiamondnLovey:  We went to the store in like Feb and we had them by the end of March. In plenty of time for the wedding. You definitely will want to order up if you already are top heavy. I was a street size 12 at the time and had to order 3 sizes up but there was plenty of room in the long part for someone who was pregnant. I am 5’4″ and it could have been taken up about 5 inches too, I just wore higher heels.

DiamondnLovey:  I’m in the same boat and will be 8 months pregnant! Do you have to all have the same material? I’m going to wear a henkaa dress. One of those wear any way you like and fits size 0-14

Since you will be 8 months, I would try to find a maternity dress.  David’s Bridal and the Jasmine Bridesmaid brand both make some dresses in maternity styles.

Keep in mind that the reason you would have to order so big in an empire style dress in because even though the outer layer may be flowy and have lots of extra fabric, the inner layer (or lining) may be straight. There are a lot of designers who do this because the dress, even though empire, is not meant to have a baby bump underneath. So you aren’t buying the three sizes up for the outer layer, it’s the lining you have to worry about.

I work at a bridal salon and always recommend if someone is going to be pregnant at the time of the wedding, it is ALWAYS easier to buy a maternity dress than a regular bridesmaid dress. Maternity dresses are made to accommodate the baby bump, regular bridesmaid’s dresses are not, which is why you would spend so much money altering it. Usually in a regular bridesmaid dress, the dress has to be completely restructured on top (and our salon does not have alterations, so we do not make people order big just to make money like some people think).

I say, if the bride is good with it, buy a maternity style dress. Belsioe and B2 bridesmaids (by Jasmine bridal) and Alfred Angelo both offer maternity styles. Alfred angelo I know have a dark chocolate brown! They also offer a cheaper rush than $40 (it is $20 for a regular rush and $30 for a super rush). Alfred Angelo will also be the cheaper of the two brands.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

DiamondnLovey:  I agree! That’s why I said look for something maternity. Those options I gave are just specific designers of Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses that offer maternity Because I didnt know exactly what you needed/bride wanted. But I think you should be looking more on like maternity websites and things like that.
