I am so paranoid to get sick. I feel horribly but today I got a harsh dose of reality. My daughter loves going to the zoo on Mondays as the zoo hosts a band geared towards children. They play in a large room where the children dance, run around and are in close proximity of eachother. I did not take her this week because I am scared she will get sick (the flu is strong in my area right now). She is disappointed, and I am nervous I am overreacting. What do you think? Are you scared, too?

I think you are overreacting a bit. Even though the flu is bad right now, for most people with healthy immune systems, it just means a few days of bed rest.

Me! I’m a newborn photographer and I’ll lose a lot of clients/money if I get sick. There’s no rescheduling in this business! I’m totally afraid and have been practically showering in antibactical soap.

I’m terrified! I’m washing my hands and sanatizing everything. The last time I contracted influenza, I wound up in the hospital.

Yep I am scared of getting the flu or more specifically my 15 month old son, but also know you can’t stop living life and he has gotten the flu shot and is in a in home licensed day care so odds are he won’t get it. Knock on wood…

@LovelyLaura: nope, being afraid of something like that wastes time and energy. It sets an example of being fearful to children, when empowering them and encouraging them is a more productive route….I get where you are coming from, parents have to do what they have to do, if it were me, we would have gone, and washed our hands really well afterward, because as much as we love playing with our friends, we don’t like playing with their germs.

I added a poll. And my daughter just asked me AGAIN to go to the zoo 🙁 I feel terrible but she is only 4 and I would feel even worse if she wee to get sick.

The media is blowing this way out of proportion. The CDC’s definition of an “epidemic” is not synonymous with mass panic-levels of outbreak. Even at its worst, less than 10% of people get the flu. Big outbreaks usually hover around 5% of the population, mostly in the young and old. Healthy people have a lot more to worry about from non-flu viruses.

I am!! I got the flu shot, but my immune system is so bad that even a cold puts me out for a week. I’ve been eating way better and exercising…I’ve also washed my hands probably 8 times today so far. BUT, this morning at the gym, a friend had the nerve to tell me he felt sick while talking to me. I smelled his breath from where I was standing (yuk) which means I breathed in whatever virus he had. Some people. Ugh.

@Nona99: I know I am a bit extreme, I really wish I wasn’t this way. I just can’t help it. Yesterday a woman in the grocery store sneezed without covering her mouth (she was walking in front of us). I literally did a 180 with my daughter and booked it down another aisle.
As for implying fear in my child, I just told her that today is not a good day and we have stuff to do around the house (which is true) and that we will go some other time. So far we have played a game, done puzzles, watched a movie, played “hairstyle” with her dollies, and had lunch (all while I am still packing up from Christmas), and I am bringing her outside shortly to play.

@mayahpay: Me too!! The last time I got the flu I ended up in the ER, it was the worst 2 or 3 weekds of my life.

I’m pregnant so yeah, I’m scared.

I try to wash my hands no matter if the flu is about or not. I tend to avoid sick people in general, and I try to take care of my body. That being said, while no one likes the flu, I’m not afraid of it. If I get it, I get it. If I don’t (more than likely) I don’t.
I should mention, in the hopes of full disclosure, that I am TERRIFIED of children coughing… Plague ridden little… I dunno. There is something that just genuinely scares me about a little kids cough (they sound so distinct, too). I just get the feeling that if I am in a few yards of it, I will contract some ungodly something that has been evolving and incubating in their germy little bodies. 😀 Kids are cute, but i hate how easily they spread germs when they are sick. T_T

I eat well, excercise, take vitamins. If I get the flu,I normally don’t notice it. Children haven’t yet built up their immunity system so they get everything going around. A lot of my friends get the flu injection because due to work and family commitments they can’t afford to get the flu. Just enjoy life and don’t worry about it.Make sure you always wash your hands and don’t touch your nose 🙂

I’am!!!! I get the flu shot every year but I’m super paranoid about being sick. I dont want to be near anyone who is sick or says they feel sick because my immune system is shit because of my IBS and I wash my hands and sanitize them ALL the time. I’m what you would call a SUPER germaphobe.
@sheepandbear: Eww!! That is so gross!! I would have freaked out if I were you!!
