@FutureMuniz:  Have you looked at getting a poodle or poodle mix? They are often times better for people with allergies. DH’s family wanted a dog, but his one brother is allergic. They were able to get a toy poodle which his brother has fewer problems with. The dog doesn’t sleep in bed with him and he tries to avoid being licked, as he does get itchy when that happens.

My Darling Husband is allergic to cats. Oddly enough, we found certain cats don’t bother him at all.

We’re in a similar situation. My husband grew up with cats, but I’m allergic, so we’ve not been able to have one, as much as he wants one. It makes me feel so bad!

There are definitely breeds of dogs (in addition to poodles) that are hypoallergenic. Have you looked into that as an option? I’m a dog-lover myself, so I know the feeling of wanting a puppy so badly!

I am not surprised to see Maltese on that list!

We had a little Maltese while I was growing up, and I never had any allergy issues or anything. Later on in life and I found through allergy testing for other purposes that I have a moderate dog allergy.

@FutureMuniz:  Poodles are one of the more well-known for being hypoallergenic, but they definitely aren’t the only ones! I know a Samoyed isn’t a husky, but they have a lot of similarities, and Samoyeds are hypoallergenic. πŸ™‚

I am the one allergic in our relationship, although I am allergic to cats not dogs thank goodness! Fiance has always been more of a cat person, but has never really asked if we could get a cat one day or anything, has never been outspoken about wanting a cat. And he has spent a lot of time with my dogs over the years and has become more interested in getting a dog πŸ™‚ I agree with PPs who suggest hypoallergenic breeds.

I want a puppy so badly, but Darling Husband is allergic. He starts wheezing and will break out into hives when around them. It makes me so sad to know that we will never be able to have a dog or give our kids the opportunity to have a dog & experience that. πŸ™

I have a maltese that has hair rather than fur and dandruff.  She needs to be groomed and maintained, but she’s absolutely adorable.  =)  (She’s my avatar).

@FutureMuniz:  Yay yay yay! One of my best friends growing up had a Samoyed and she was the sweetest dog!

Just remember that you will need to groom and bathe your dog regularly, wash all toys, pick up all hair etc so your SO is less likely to react, you will have to do all of this unfortunately as your SO wouldn’t be able to due to his allergies. Let us know how the conversation goes!

@MARIE901:  Yep — that’s exactly the situation we are in. We’ll be getting a dog at some point too. I’m so glad that my husband likes both dogs and cats (even though he grew up with cats).
