@regit45:  I sort of am. We’re going to my family’s tomorrow for Christmas Eve, but we’re coming home that night. My Fiance works Christmas day so it will just be me and the cats.

DH and I went to his family’s last Christmas, which was my first Christmas away from my own family (apart from when I was living out west, so I guess this isn’t my first, huh?), and it was awkward. I had a hard time with it bc Mother-In-Law is cuh-razy.

But you will be fine. 🙂 Try to do the stuff that is important to you (like we picked out Christmas ornaments for our then-future tree while we visited Sacramento and San Francisco last year, we watched all the movies I watched during my childhood together, etc.) And now I have some spiffy ornaments on my tree that I will remember our trip to his family’s by. And next year when we go back (we are doing an every other year thing), we will pick out more, and it will be a new tradition.

Why are you away from them? Are you away on a vacation, or is your family gone for some reason, or is your SO gone, or?

Sort of. Normally DH and I go to my parents for Christmas but we’re not this year, it does feel different as going to theirs has kind of become and felt the norm.

Yep. First Christmas away from my family.  DH and I have been married 2 years.  Last year, he was deployed so I went home for Christmas and New Year’s.  This year he is home and it will be our first Christmas in our own home.  I’m trying to focus on that aspect instead of being away from my parents, siblings, their kids, and our traditions.

My family is out of state this year. It kind of sucks, because I have a two year old baby sister I bought presents for and would have preferred to see her open and play with them, but other than that I am fine. Christmas isn’t really that big of a deal to me to begin with though.

@regit45:  Yes, this is the first time in my H or my life (we are 35 and 37 by the way) that we have ever spent christmas in our own home and not flown anywhere.  Frankly we’re kind of sick of flying all the time!

So we have no plans.  I’m not making a big dinner (maybe a nice dinner).  We don’t usually exchange gifts (rather we buy big joint gifts throughout the year, like new landscaping, a new deck, a new grill).  Hopefully we will go skiing or something outside. H’s mom sent some gifts, so we’ll open those tomorrow.  But I did not do a tree, just minimal decorations.

We are looking forward to no obligations or traveling or anything.  I kind of thought we could get away with not buying presents for the neices and nephews, but it didn’t work out that way.  So Amazon Prime saved the day.

H’s mom does a nice Christmas and all, but I’m not religious, Christmas is not a big deal to me and I hate dealing with the holiday travel crowds.  It just makes sense to stay home finally!

@regit45:  I’m doing the opposite, and I’m miserable. For the last three years that Fiance and I were together we lived in Florida and our families were in the Northeast. We got to have our own traditions and do Christmas our way. His parents usually visited at the beginning of December or January and my mom would come down around Christmas week. But since we moved back up north it’s like what we want to do on the holiday doesn’t matter and we’re being pulled every which way. We have to exchange our gifts tonight so that we can drive to Connecticut tomorrow morning to see his parents, then dinner with my mom on Friday, then out to my grandmother’s on Saturday. This is the least Merry I’ve felt in years.

This is my first Christmas away from home. 🙁 Since we got married in October we used all our money and vacation time on the wedding and honeymoon. Not to mention I have to work and feed the horses in the morning and evening so I have to be here anyways. 🙁 Boo.

Although my mom wants to play the dictionary game over Skype so that should be interesting!! lol

We are! In September we moved from St. Louis, MO to the South Jersey/Philly area for FI’s work. Our families are in the STL area, and since I have a new job and our move was so last minute, we didn’t have money and I didn’t have vacation time to go home. So here we are. It’s actually our first Christmas together ever (in six years!) because he would always go to his parents and I would go to mine, and it’s FI’s birthday so we’re just trying to make it special in other ways. We just finished watching Love Actually by candlelight while eating a dinner of appetizers and drinking fun beers.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I was a little bummed, though. But we’ve got trips planned home in February so it’s not the worst thing ever.

I’ve spent Christmas away from my blood family for many years. The first two times were when I was in boarding school, the others were when I spent time with friends, and now I spend time with my husbands family.
