I’m 18 weeks and still have some syptoms of constipation, although it was definitely a lot worse in the beginning for me as well. I sometimes have trouble drinking water, usually the way I force myself is by “pretending” that I have to go for an ultrasound etc. If I can do it for that, then I can force myself because I need to drink it. Yogurt has also seemed to help me… I hope you get some relieft soon!!

I’m 12 weeks and have also been suffering. My doctor told me the high levels of progesterone in the body slow down digestion, which is the cause of constipation. I drink a small (4-6 oz) glass of prune juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, and most of the time it works like a charm. The other stuff – yogurt, fiber, lots of water, exercise, even coffee – doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

futureSydow: It totally is! I’m trying to at least incorporate more fresh fruits into my diet now that I can tolerate them. I used to drink coffee everyday but stopped when I found out I was pregnant, but maybe I’ll try a small cup to see what happens!

smad11: Thanks! I’m trying to up my water but it’s definitely hard! I used to drink a lot of water before I was pregnant so I’m sure it’s part of my issue.
nightborn: See, I want to try and drink the prune juice in the morning beofre eating, but I have a really hard time in the morning eating or drinking anyhting right now. I’m hoping with drinking more water and squeezing in some prun juice somewhere, I won’t have to resort to the colace!

I am just now starting to TTC and constipation has been an ongoing battle in my life- so being pregnant and having it get worse terrifies me! But recently my OBGYN recommended a natural magnessium supplement called Natural Calm, its a powder that you mix with hot water before bed. I swear it has cured my constipation and sleep issues, I’m hoping that I can continue to take it during pregnancy (hopefully soon) and have a feeling I will be able to since it was recommended by my OB doc. Might be something worth looking into!
