i chose to write our own, but was still nervous to do it! i tried googling tips for writing them and it helped just to get the ball rolling.  Also, i wrote my first draft on my own, but then i read his and edited mine a bit after.  I didnt want to be influenced by reading his before. but i was happy to read them, it took away some of my anxiety that mine would be too long or too short, or too cheesy, etc.  And i was glad i read his in advance, because during the ceremony, i was so overwhelmed by everything,  i couldn’t focus properly on everything he was saying, but i had heard it before, so i knew!

We wrote our own vows, and we didn’t look at each other’s in advance. One thing we did to help them be somewhat similar in length and form was agree on a format. For example, for our vows, we each agreed to write 8 statements that started with “I love…” or “I promise…”. On our wedding day, my vows were still quite a bit longer than his (I would write something like “I love the way you give me big hugs exactly when I need them most.” Whereas he would say something more like “I love your big smile.”), but that just added a bit of humor to the ceremony. I am a much bigger talker than my husband, so it was only natural that I had more to say in my vows! In the end I love that we wrote our own vows and that we each heard them for the first time on our wedding day.

Haha, I am using Google as well for tips. Im waiting to write mine though because Im sure they will be pretty sappy and I need it to be a day where I can cry after reading them. Im going to try and avoid making it rhyme(I love to rhyme). Im still trying to figure out how long they should be. Im afraid that mine will be longer/shorter then his.

We’re writing our own vows too!  It was my fiance’s idea. 🙂  I have noooo idea where or how to start or how long or short or etc it should be!

yes, we wrote our own! I must admit however, that I got some of my inspiration RIGHT HERE at weddingbee! It wasn’t that hard to do for me really – the hardest part was organizing my thoughts and sentiments cohesively.

While we didn’t read them to each other beforehand, we were both panicky about the length. So we both agreed to (seperately of course) read them aloud & time them. They both came out to about 2 mins 15 seconds or so.

@Panda Pez: we are also using this idea to write ours! I’m so excited.

On the note of writing your own vows – I believe we are going to read our vows to each other (in the sense of a love letter?) and then while exchanging rings, recite the more-or-less traditional vows. How does it typically work? I’ve never been to a wedding in which non-traditional vows were used!

@sorrycharlie: Yay! You’ve made a wise choice. You don’t see it in our trailer but our reverend did have us recite a few traditional vows when exchanging our rings. How bad is it that I can’t remember what he had us say? LOL. Gosh, it’s all such a blur!

We wrote our own too. I actually rewrote them a ton, but the morning of actually rewrote them entirely. It was that morning that I felt emotional enough to really capture what that day meant.

@sorrycharlie: & @AntsyA: – Thank you! I was very strategic in choosing to read my vows first (in the trailer it’s flipped) – a selfish decision one might say seeing my poor Groom could barely get his words out. I knew I’d be a mess if I went first, hehehe

@mwitter80: Right? I didn’t write my vows until the day before our wedding. I spent hours locked up in my office soaking in all the emotions I was feeling, and poured them out onto the paper in front of me.

I’ll have a go, yeah. My degree is in English and Creative Writing so it might be good to use what I learned to write my own vows. My fiance won’t write his though 🙂
