So my fiancé and I are planning a micro wedding, and originally we were going to have the dinner reception in a private room at a fancy restaurant downtown. Things are opening back up, but I am worried about the uncertainty in the restaurant business, and thought of a genius idea- hiring a private chef for the dinner reception, and having it at my mom’s newly built house! They have a huge open kitchen, open floor plan, and a perfect dining area. It would be about 10 people.
Does anyone have experience with personal chefs? Do they work with you to come up with a menue? What was your experience like? Do you tip 20%?

I’ve used one, but it wasn’t for a reception or anything. It was just a romantic dinner for 2. We did get together and plan the menu though. He just went over some of his most common dishes and I chose items. He also had a website so I had an idea of what I wanted already. It was a good experience though. They came(the chef and his assistant) and cooked, served us, and did the dishes. We did tip about 20%

Not for a wedding but my mom did for my graduation party. She just didn’t feel like cooking or ordering from the same places we typically do for parties. So she hired a chef and 3 of his assistants to try something different. There were about 40-plus guests. We did choose the menu. We had freshly baked flat breads with a few types of spreads, green salad with herbs and dressing, Saffron rice, roasted tomatoes plus chicken and beef kebabs. It went pretty well overall plus they cleaned up everything in the kitchen (not sure if this was part of their deal or they just did it anyways). I think she tipped them around 20%.

My mom used one for her wedding. It was a while back (about 15 years ago) but it was pretty awesome. It was a brunch wedding, so the chef and his assistant let us choose fillings for omelets and toppings for waffles from a little menu card my mom made, and then they whipped up everything to order. They also had lots of sides done family style: potatoes, sausages, green and fruit salads, warm rolls. It was really nice.
