I actually would like to know this too.  I’ve never been on a plane but I know we want to travel starting around our one year anniversary (a ways off but still) and thinking about getting on the plane makes me incredibly anxious.

Yeah, I do.  I don’t take meds but I wish I could.  I literally spend the entire time pleading with God to get me to my destination safely and promising to never fly again.  I hate flying so much.  I hate the sensation of falling and it seems that I always get it when we reach crusing altitude.

I HATE flying!  I feel sooooo uncomfortable and very anxious the entire time.  Sometimes I will take dramamine… not for motion sickness but just to make me sleep!  Or some sort of tylenol pm or something.  That still doesn’t help with take off and landing though.  I find if I bring a book or magazine that I can keep myself occupied.  I just have to force my mind to continue to focus on the book I am reading instead of what is actually happening!

GOOD LUCK!!!

yes.  Horrible.  It starts a few days before.  When I was in 4th grade, a plane and a helicopter collided over my school and I’ve never been the same since.  I used to take RX drugs, but just take a sleep aid if I can – but usually don’t need to because I haven’t slept for day before.

To me – staying awake is important because I mentally keep the plane in the air.  It’s REALLY weird, but I just think about it the whole time and it’s the only thing that keeps me sane (even though it’s insane!).  I usually fall asleep, though, because the whole process is exhausting!

@beekiss2: I hate the idea of falling too.  I don’t like roller coasters not because they’re going to break but because I feel like I’m falling.  Also, some rides take a minute for me to get used to because I feel like I’m going to fall.

I used to be a nervous flier … but then my Fiance (then BF) and I became long distance.  It’s amazing how much easier it was when he was waiting on the other side! But seriously, I was still nervous.  To relax, I did a few things — remind myself that this is safe, pray (same thing over and over again while taking off), and distracting myself with a really good book or magazine and (when allowed to do so), put on soothing music on my ipod.  If alcohol relaxes your anxiety, have a drink (but if you get motion sick, I don’t recommend that).  I’ve never tried any meds, so I can’t really address that.

What’s helped me the most is flying more often so I got used to it.  And best of all is having Fiance with me b/c he calms my anxiety like none other.  Good luck!

I hate flying. Haaate. Hate thinking about it. Never taken anything, though. I just sit in terror and will the plane to stay up in the sky.

I take ativan and I haven’t flown alone in a really long time. But some things that help calm me down are focusing on controlling my breathing and repeating in my head “Everything is fine”. It’s sounds stupid but it actually works for me. I also bring stuff to distract me; books, magazines, watch movies. I spend a lot of time watching the flight attendants too. I figure if they aren’t freaking, than things are probably ok.

@mandb122:  Yeah, I hate roller coasters.  The sensation makes me want to barf and it feels like my body is being ripped to shreds.

@mthoma27:  Yeah, I take something to make me focus but I’m still preoccupied by all the noises and sensations so it doesn’t really work, atleast it keeps my eyes on something.

@IlsaLund:  Yeah, I also “will” the plane to fly.

Without fail, everytime I am about to get on a plane, there is a plane crash or some tragedy with planes/trains whatever.

I remember getting ready to fly to Spain – terrorists bombed the train station in Atocha.

Huge crashes in Africa the last time I got on a plane in May.

Now we just had the mail bombs on planes. I leave Monday for Florida.

I figure all the bad stuff happens BEFORE so it won’t happen WHEN I’m on the plane. The only thing that stresses me out is my BF! He is 6 foot and broad shouldered, so the man does not fit well in a plane seat. I feel so awful for him when we fly together. I am vowing to always try for an exit row so he can just have those few extra inches.
