So after much deliberation I decided to make an appointment with a dressmaker to have her make a dress very similar to one I fell in love with but would be way too heavy for my Mexico wedding.
What has been your experience with custom wedding gowns? I know it’ll depend on getting a good seamstress, but just in general, were you happy with it?

I did but I am on my phone and in math class for the next 4 hours but I can tell you my custom dress experience later when I get home and can post pictures.

I did as well. I wanted a dress with a covered back (not a bolero), straps (not added later to a strapless dress), and not a plunging neckline…..so I had to go the custom route.
I lucked out and found a great store in town that did custom work. I was very happy with the sales lady as well as the seamstress so it made me feel much better about doing it. It was made in China and then tweaked here.
What I did was gave them very specific details with numerous pictures in a printout so that in the event something came in wrong I didn’t have to pay to have it fixed. I was confident that anything could be fixed it was just a matter of who was going to pay for the mistake. My dress had parts from 5 different dresses combined to make mine. I designed everything to work better for me as I am not a small bride: the shape, neckline, back, details, and flowers. Overall it was fantastic. It came in better than I expected and for a price that was very close to dresses in the store. I am shocked more people don’t go this route.
My inspiration was an ivory Allure Allencon Lace Dress with sash and flowers:
My dress made in white Alencon lace with a covered back and neckline changed:
With the belt changed for the reception:
I feel that if you know exactly what you want are very clear about your order it should be fine. Keep in mind they are the experts and those seamstresses work miracles. Good luck and I would love to hear how it goes.

I’m getting my dress made by someone here because I love Ivy and Aster so much and they don’t sell their dresses in South Africa. I am fully confident in her abilities.
I think having it done by a dressmaker makes the process more personal. She’s also able to customise it according to your body type and wants. Just make sure that your visions are aligned.
