I was there last June (Aventura Spa Palace) and had no problems.  We weren’t really interested in leaving the resort other than to go see Tulum (not for safety reasons though, we just really loved it there!) and we felt perfectly safe.   We are going back for our honeymoon to El Dorado just down the road!

It’s fine. I’ve been several times.  I caught the collectivo (white van that is like a bus that runs along main highway) back and forth from the resorts to Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum all the time

I never felt threatened, not once.  Not even a little bit.

You’ll love it!

I was a Bridesmaid or Best Man for a wedding that got called off and got to go on the “honeymoon” with the bride. We stayed at Secrets Silversands. Room was GREAT. Service was wonderful. Beach was beautiful but a bit rocky out in the water. The all-inclusive was fantastic…we were there for a week and never had to leave the resort. It was great that there were no kids there, too, but at times it felt more like a spring break hangout than a honeymoon spot…

stayed at Secrets Capri back in January and it was phenomenal.  Its the oldest of the Secrets properties (7 years old) and the smallest, but we had the best time and I didn’t even go on my honeymoon.  There are 2 other Secrets Resorts in the Riviera Maya.  Secrets Maroma Beach is a bit bigger so if you are looking for more to do, then I would go there.  It’s only 5 minutes from Secrets Capri and about a 10-15 minute drive to Playa del Carmen.

@meladoug: We went there for our honeymoon last May!  We loved it!

We never felt unsafe.  OUr resort had guards at the front gate.  We went on resort sanctioned excursions twice and it was totally fine.  We even took a cab into Playa del Carmen one day and never felt uneasy or anything.
