Congratulations on what I hope is a successful outcome!  Are you set on having your dress made-to-order?  If you are more comfortable waiting awhile to see what your size will be and what’s flattering on your new figure, what about trying on dresses a little later in the summer and then buying a previously-worn wedding dress or having one custom-made?  I guess otherwise you could go for a style with more room for alteration, especially one with a corset back, and do your best to estimate what your new weight/size will be by this fall.  Has your doctor given you an estimate of what your weight loss might be by then?

I haven’t had surgery, but I did order my dress online via ebay.  The shop is in China and I knew it was a gamble, but I only paid $150 for the dress AND in plenty of time before my wedding in case I needed to buy from a shop.

I just took the dress to the seamstress today and she’s amazed at the quality of the dress and only has to alter the bust a bit (a little shapeless with my lingerie) and hem it.

If you can return it as much as you want, then I think you’re fine.  I would just find a seamstress and agree to have a dress to her by X date (that way you can get your final exchange done).  I’m sure everything will be OK! 😉

I got the lapband in Jan. I have lost 30 lbs to date and I am 5’1. I went from an 18/20-16/14. I have a DB size 18w dress. At the moment it zips perfectly. I am expecting to maybe lose another 10-12. I’n starting to slow since my BMI is a lot lower now. I suggest getting a corset backed dress. It will save you a TON on alterations.

This is a personal question, but I’ve always wondered– how do normal regular people PAY for lap band? I would LIVE to have it (street size 16/18) but I don’t see how I could ever afford 20 grand! My best friend had it about 5 years ago, but her parents paid out of pocket (her dad is a surgeon and loaded).

How did you ladies pay for it? Did you finance it? Did your insurance cover it? How big do you have to be to qualify for insurance coverage?

@texaslawgirl…..I actually had gastric bypass surgery which cost about $60K but my insurance covered it and I only had to pay a $1,000 co-payment.  I did have to complete quite a few requirements which included attending 6 months of education classes….having a psych evaluation and a few other things which took me about 9 months total to complete.  Also…one had to have a BMI of at least 40% OR a BMI of at least 35% along with comorbidities which would consisit of being diabetic, having high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc….

@bklynldy….I really feel for you because I know that I went through clothes, like a newborn baby does, in the first 8-9 months after having my surgery.  I know that typically the weight loss is slower with the lap band vs. gastric bypass but in my case…I lost the most weight during the first 4 months, then the weight loss came gradually until I eventually just came to a plateau.  For example…..I lost about 60lbs in the first 4 months….about another 40 during months 5-10 and then the last 26 lbs in the very last 2 months.  I basically lost 126lbs in a year.  I went from a size 24 to a size 10.  I now yo-yo with about 10 lbs….(trying hard to stop that though.)  Anyways, I really feel for you because weight loss varies so much you can’t really know how much you will lose….I for one never thought I would lose that much weight so quickly.  I would definitely recommend ordering a dress a couple sizes smaller (keeping in mind that wedding dress sizes run smaller to begin with) and then choose one with a corset back or a style that can be more easily altered.  Good luck to you and I wish you the best!
