If that’s his best buddy, I’d leave a spot open for him, if he makes it in time. There is no law against having other groomsmen around though just for balencing out the aisle.

@TopazWedding:  Our best man was in the army and he arrived at midnight the night before. He missed the rehearsal, although we didn’t have to worry about him not arriving on time. I would simply explain the ceremony duties to the guy standing next to him and ask him to pass them to the best man, so that he knows them and if he has to step in, can do so easily, but you should be just fine 🙂 It’s not that hard–hand a ring over pretty much. I know it’s stressful, but it’s no big deal.

@TopazWedding:  I think you should leave him in there and have Fiance mention to one of the Groomsmen closer to the day they may have to step in. If they are that close itmight  not be cool to have someone else assigned when this guy is breaking his ass to get back for your wedding. I’d show faith but have a backup plan, as opposed to him showing up being the backup plan.

I would leave him in.  My brother had a groomsman who was in the service, and overseas on his wedding day.  He didn’t replace him, but instead stood up during dinner and announced that one of his best friends was off serving our country.  He then honored the groomsmans parents who were at the wedding.  Everyone stood up and clapped, and it turned out to be a touching moment.

@TopazWedding:  Totally leave him in in my opinion.  The people who stand beside you are the ones who support/continue to support you both and your marriage.  Whether he is there that day or not, if he is your FI’s best man then clearly he is doing that role. 🙂 Plus, he has a pretty good excuse if he doesn’t make it and I think a quick acknowledgement, if it ends up he can’t be there (or even if he is!) is very sweet and thoughtful. 🙂

@jka0282:  Love this – very fitting

@MadTownGirl:  agreed!

good luck OP – I know nerves can be a killer, but if there was ever a reason for someone to not show up with a good reason, this is it. I hope your day goes brilliantly for you!!
