I’ve been thinking about adopting a second dog for quite a while, and I found one that I think would be a great fit with my other dog, but he has diabetes, so I’ve started researching canine diabetes to see if it is something I think I can handle. I just want to see if anyone has a dog with diabetes and what your experience has been with it. Is it expensive? A hassle you wish you didn’t have? No big deal at all?

Oh he’s so cute! Sorry I can’t really help as I have no experience, but I would imagine with such a small dog the costs couldn’t be that much. Maybe you could find a pom board to ask on?

I don’t but I worked at a vet clinic for years.. it’s not hard to do shots as long as they are ok. I think they have discontinued vetsulin since I’ve worked, and started them on humalin (i could be totally wrong).. I don’t know the cost, and it depends on how many units you have to give your little guy. You might also need to take the dog in to have glucose curves depending on who your vet is and what there procedure is with this.
My best bet, would be to call your vet for price, and what you would exactly need.

My lab was diagnosed with diabetes at six months old. She lived until she was 11! Much longer than a dog with diabetes normally does. I had to give her insulin twice a day, every day. TopazWedding is right, they no longer have insulin for animals, but the Humilin N is what I was prescribed for my dog. Cost completey depends on the amount of insulin your dog will need each day. Was it an expense, yes! Was it a hassle, at times! Would I ever have changed it, not for a second! For eleven years, twice a day I needed to be there for her and in return she was always there for me. Sure there were times when it was inconvenient, but I miss her every single day that goes by. I will also point out that there are other medical things that can happen to a dog with diabetes, but with proper monitoring and diligence it is completely manageable. Let me know if you have any questions at all and good luck!
