When someone ran into my Fiance car, it was totaled out. (we only had it for ONE day!!) But they had a guy come out and look at it and determine what its worth, then they send you a check and take your car away. It took about a week for the money to come in.

both cars!? thats terrible!!!

my car was totaled in an accident a few years ago. i owned it outright, so they just cut me a check. apparently they use the dealer resale value rather than the blue book value. this is a good thing since the dealer value is usually higher! i felt the price the gave was fair and it was pretty easy. dealing with the dirtbags that INTENTIONALLY caused the accident for insurance fraud, less easy.

I don’t know about the appraisal values and such, but here’s something that might help you out: Sometimes the insurance company will let you buy-back the totaled car. You can’t have full-coverage insurance on it anymore, but you can have liability coverage. My parents did that with one of their cars that was totaled due to hail damage.

I had someone hit me and leave the scene and it totaled my car. It took about a week for insurance people to come look at it and about a week later I had a check for the dealer’s price of the car. I’m also still doing paperwork though because I was injured and that’s a whole bunch of other paperwork.

My car got totaled during hurricane Irene.  A massive tree fell on the car.  My car insurance reimbursed me on the total of the car’s value with some to spare.  They did ask that if there was any work done on the car recently; if yes, I should submit the receipts for it.  //  It took about a week for the adjuster to come look at the car.  And, two weeks for all the checks to get to me. (I received the first half of the insurance money the first week.)  It was relatively painless but I was on pins and needles for a while.

My biggest tip is: Do NOT just accept the amount that they offer you for your cars. Please go on Kelly Blue Book as well as other dealership websites in your area to research how much a car with the same make/model/year/mileage as yours would be sold for.

When my car was totaled after only owning it for 3 months they tried to offer me $2000 less than what I knew my car was actually worth. It didn’t matter that I had paid about the same amount. I faxed the woman 3 examples of what my car was worth and she upped the price to be comparitive. Just make sure you do everything in writing, take lots of notes when you discuss things over the phone and DO NOT let them push you around. It is overwhelming but you should get a good deal if you keep a strong backbone.

@MM423:  Thank you. It’s nothing major… And I agree with MsBrooklynA. If you feel like you’re being short changed, you don’t have to accept the offer they give you. I imagine I lucked out by getting as much as I did, but I did have other figures on hand just in case.

Good luck!

I totalled my car on my way to meet Fiance for our second date. It got towed to the shop. The shop determined how much it would cost to repair and the insurance company determined it was more then the cost of the car so they gave us the option to take the money or to have it repaired. We took the money. I got more then i expected. Actually I made a profit from what i paid for the car! I guess they didn’t realize half of what was wrong with it before the crash. It took a few weeks to get that all squared away and to get the check for the value of my car.
