My family had a guinea pig that was re-homed to us when I was a teenager and I was responsible for a lot of the care. He was sweet and cute, but honestly I’ve never been tempted to have another. He was so delicate I was always nervous holding him, and I didn’t feel like the mess and amount of food he went through was worth it.
Just wondering, have you considered rats? Darling Husband and I had a pair of brothers for a few years and loved them! They need plenty of cage upkeep as well, but I felt like they were much more sociable with us than any guinea pigs I’ve known. Rats are highly intelligent, curious, affectionate animals, and have very distinct personalities. They have shorter lifespans which can be a positive if you’re new to having pets, although it can be hard to say goodbye after what feels like such a short amount of time. Ours came from a reputable breeder and lived quite long for rats (almost 3 years), and I was heartbroken when each of them passed away from old age. We enjoyed them immensely though and may get rats again in the future.
