would this be bacause its declared value is more than you can bring in without paying taxes?

If so just declare it as less valuable – its like a car anyway as soon as you drive it off lot its value decrease!  I just brought mine through customs in Jamaica (carried in on) and had no issues.  Our bags were full of wedding stuff – so it was noticable that we had extra baggage coming into Jamaica and we had no issues at all.

….or am I totally misunderstanding why you would have to pay taxes on it…

Europe is not one country 😉 Each country has it’s own tax and custom regulations, but i don’t see why you should have to pay tax at all. You are on vacation, and normally you only have to make a custom declaration if you are a returning citizen who is importing an item that was purchased in another country or if you carry an outrageous amount of cash

Edit: I don’t know how it works when you are returning to the US, but it might make sense to chave a copy of your dress invoice, as a proof that you did buy the dress in the US and not while you were overseas
