has anyone had success selling on etsy? If so, any advice? How much did you invest in your start up? What helped your success?
I’m contemplating starting a shop. My sewing skills are up there with a professional seamstress though I have only sewn for hobby and my own skirt addiction. I crochet, knit, spin yarn, quilt and embroider also.
Im thinking of doing skirts, some wedding related stuff and cutesy stuff for pictures, events, holidays. Things Like veils, sashes/belts, bridal cover ups/toppers/capelets, accessories for girls (headbands, gloves, hair bows etc) And accessories for boys (bow ties, ties, vests, suspenders etc).
My sewing skills are up to snuff and I’m mostly hoping to make 500$ or so a month. I’m just worried about sitting on a ton of hand made inventory while im waiting for sales. I guess that’s par for the course Though.

I opened an Etsy shop back in February but unfortunately haven’t sold anything so far. I think a lot of it is that I don’t have much inventory yet….I’ve heard that is important. I’m an artist, so I’m selling prints. I’m new to doing art professionally, so I’m still trying to build up a portfolio of commercial work. I’m hoping in time it will get better.

I opened one about two years ago and a as a knitter, the market was so saturated, it was difficult to generate the kind of traffic I felt I deserved. I think I sold about three pieces which didn’t pay for the time it took me to set up my shop and photograph my items or the cost of my listings. I wish you luck though. There are some very successful entrepreneurs on etsy!

I have one, but we don’t really push it and haven’t updated our listings recently. We’ve had the shop for just over 2 years, and only had 3 sales, total. I think this is down to the cost for postage… my products are gourmet confectionery, and there appears to be a limit as to how much people happily spend on a consumable good.
Best of luck though!

To be honest, you won’t earn $500 per month UNLESS you put a ton of energy, effort, and money into it. If you don’t promote your listings, which is the biggest cost going into it, you won’t get any clicks and you won’t get any sales. I went in hoping for $100-$200 per month and I average one $20 sale every 3 months…sooooo…..yeah.
