My Fiance and I are both foresters, so we are getting a set of nice bands and a set of cheapies.  It is necessary for our job because walking in the woods or fighting wildland fires the rings will scratched up like crazy.  The e-ring just gets taken off while I am in the woods.

I have a stand-in ring.  It’s actually just my promise ring that he gave me about two years into our relationship and it sits a lot lower than my engagement ring (plus my diamond was his grandmother’s).  I wear it because I work at a group home and in case anything happens, I don’t want my ring snagging on their clothes and hurting them or causing the diamond to come lose.  I also got blood on it one day when I wore it and I don’t want that happening again.  So mine is just a band with diamond hearts on it that’s light and sits very low on my finger.

My e-ring is FI’s great grandmother’s ring on his mother’s side. I don’t wear it to work at all. I work in a hospital and have to deal with equally icky things, and also I was always scared I’d be moving a patient on a board, or putting down a stretcher rail and knock a stone out or something.

I don’t have a “stand in” right now, just planning to wear my wedding band only after the big day 🙂

I work at Starbucks and my ring is antique with a delicate filagree design with tiny diamonds around the band, so I’m always worried about a stone falling out at work (into a drink!)… Fiance gave me a promise ring a year into our relationship, it’s a really simple band with three tiny diamonds in the middle, so I wear that to work.  When we get married and have our bands I will just wear that.. but then again, I will almost be in grad school at that time & won’t be working for very much longer!

I intentionally got a wedding band that’s plain with no diamonds, so I could easily wear latex gloves and whatnot at work.  Unfortunately, it’s another 3 months before I get to wear it.  In the meantime, I put my rings on my necklace when they’re getting in the way, so I still have them with my but they aren’t snagging on anything.  I think a stand-in is fine, but when you have a wedding band, you could just wear that and not worry about a stand-in for the engagement ring.

I work and attend school in a kitchen. The only type of rings we can wear are plain bands. So most days, I don’t get to wear my e-ring, either, and it sucks. I won’t wear my wedding band yet, because I want to save that for the big day.

If I were you, and I could wear a ring with stones in it but I was afraid of damaging it, I could totally see buying an inexpensive “stand in” ring. I’d probably try to get one that looked as much like the real ring as possible.

Interesting – I made this topis a month ago, and got a lot of rude & judgmental responses: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/stand-in-rings I’m glad people are not reacting like that in this thread…

I’m still trying to decide whether to have a cz replica of my ring made, or to get a new one entirely.
