i think if you are close enough to ask, then there is no problem! just ask and explain you are not traditional and why you want them there.  If i could go back  in time, i would have asked a guy friend of mine over some of the girls I asked. In the end, i asked him to be an usher and included him in all my bridal party pics. and i told him what i wished i had done and he still felt honored!

I really want Fiance & I to switch my brother and his sister to “un-traditional” sides; having my brother on my side instead of his.

Yep. I’m fairly certain that everyone one on my side will be guys. My mom is being very unsupportive in this saying I should ask aunts or cousins and just invite the guys but I say screw that! I want my best friends up there not just whoever has the gender usually needed for that role

You could tell them that it’s usually a woman’s job… but you are about your closest friends standing beside you… and you’re it! So be the man, and stand next to me 🙂 Also explain that your Fiance has closer friends who are women, so y’all aren’t trying to be weird and “switch roles”, that’s just how it played out 🙂

My brother was the only person that stood up to me.  It was super easy to ask him and I just told him that I couldn’t imagine anyone else being up tehre with me.

@Miss Fish: Bridesmen and Groomsmaids is what I’ve been calling it… My mother thinks I’m nuts, but I have two brothers and a sister and Fiance has two sisters and a best friend that we would like to stand up for us. I know his sisters but not well enough that I’d trade them for my brothers! It just makes more sense to me.

I really love this idea and I wanted my brother on my side since we are close, however my Mother-In-Law said it goes against “the rules of a wedding”…. ANYWAY! I think it’s awesome and it’s your wedding. I totally agree you should have the people you love next to you, regardless of gender.

@Miss Fish: FINISH HIM!

Sorry had to say it. Just take your gut feelings and go for it. If your guys are your best friends there is no reason why you cant have them up there. I just asked them to be my bridesmen and man of honor. They were all tickled and immediately asked if they could wear dresses ( I know some weird dudes). But I honestly wouldnt’ have it any other way than what I am doing and neither should you. Dont let anyone pressure you or let social conformity get in the way of you having the people you care about and who are about you up there to stand up with you. If I could I’d so have Liu Kang up there 😛

I’m tempted to ask my brother as my “bridesmate” to join my sister whom I’ll definitely ask to be Maid/Matron of Honor.  (My family is coast guard.)  My SO is the one that suggested we each have our siblings (both have brother & sister) stand up with us.

I’ve been using “bridesman” and “groomswomen”.
