My exFI designed my ring – according to him, it was fairly easy.  I would recommend going to a jeweler who does this on a regular basis.

@atreyu547: my first and current setting and both custom settings. My first turned out terrible, machine marks in the gold and splotchy beading… My current turned out perfect (different jeweler). I definitely recommend just making sure the jeweler is reputable.

I received heirloom diamonds from my mother in law and so I took those and made a custom ring. I was somewhat limited in that I had the diamonds and needed to figure out how to make it work. I thought very hard about making a pave band solitaire with matching diamond band, but in the end I put all the diamonds in the engagement ring and got a matching white gold wedding band. The process was fairly simple. I went to the jeweler and he configured the diamonds sort of how I was envisioning it. I also saw a picture of a similar ring, but mine looks different because my diamonds are a different size. I wasn’t expecting the side to look like this, or for it to be set up so high. I guess that was my fault when I approved the picture because I didn’t pay close attention to all the views. We could line the side with diamonds or put a few hidden diamonds in, but it doesn’t bother me right now and you can’t even tell because of my wedding band.

The center stone is just under a carat, the halo stones are .10 each.

My ering is a custom piece that is handset and the matching wedding band is also handset. I absolutely recommend it as long as you go to a reputable jeweler that is experienced with custom designs. Our jeweler gets a lot of custom work and design a lot of pieces in-house. Some Bees have gone to jewelers that didn’t have a lot of experience with custom pieces and there were issues of itegrity, quality and comfort. Definitely read online reviews and ask them how often they do custom work.

I had my wedding band custom designed. I saw it online and was able to take a picture of it to our jeweler. I LOVE my ring. I would highly recommend getting exactly what you want, because it’s one of the only tangible things (other than pictures) you can still enjoy after the big day.

One suggestion: take a lot of pictures, have a clear vision of what you want, and don’t be shy about saying exactly what you want/expect. Don’t leave anything to chance, because you need to LOVE it – you’ll be looking at it every day! My jeweler made a wax mold of my ring that I got to try on before he made the final band, in case there were any changes that needed to be made. My fiance wanted a couple of small things changed, and the jeweler was able to do it because we had molds beforehand.

I highly recommend designing your own if you haven’t found anything you LOVE. Good luck!

Mine was custom and I wouldn’t have done it any other way! The process was so easy. We told the jeweler what we wanted, FH went a couple weeks later and picked out the center stone, and then a few weeks after that he had the whole ring drawn up on his CAD software. He made it in 3D so it looked exactly what it would look like in real life and I loved it! So once he knew we could proceed, he finished it. We will be having him do our wedding bands as well!

I took several pictures with me ahead of time and was very very clear with what I wanted..I think that’s mainly why it was such an easy process.  I didn’t give him any room to misinterpret what I wanted!

@atreyu547:  we went custom. i didn’t have anything to do with the actual process – we talked about what i liked, and fiance went to a jeweller who he knew would do a good job from knowing their previous work. i know he was very detailed to them when he talked to them about the design, so i would recommed to be as thorough as possible. for us it came out absolutely perfect and it was exactly how i dreamt it would be!

My fiance designed the ring from scatch after the original ring he proposed with ended up being a disaster, we found a jeweler here in MN who has there own designer in house he was able to sit with her multiple times thru out the process and really make some thing that is 100% unique and exactly what we wanted. I just love it, and she is making now a matching wedding band that should be done this week and i cannot wait to see it!!!!

Yes, I am having a custom band made. I just went to the jeweler where we got my engagement ring from. They were very helpful and it was pretty easy. The downfall now is that I have to send my ring away for 4 weeks while they use it to make the band! Not happy about that but oh well…

My custom experience is totally different from most and I’m still in the process. I found a jeweler on etsy who’s designs I loved. She had lots of plain, simple bands and then an entirely seperate shop with some amazing hand forged work. So I got in touch with her and started asking about the things I’m looking for and I’m really excited for the finished product. We’re waiting til after the wedding to actually set the wheels in motion because we couldn’t really afford to tie money up anywhere but the wedding and bills, plus we’re using my FI’s late mother’s set for the actual ceremony. But basically my ring will be a hand pieced compilation of prefab pieces. It’s a little scary having to trust in someone over the internet, but the woman I’m working with has been amazing and I know if I’m at all dissatisfied she’ll work with me to fix it, and I certainly don’t see that being an issue because I’ll be involved every step of the way. I can’t wait to get the process past design and into production and then to receive my ring so I can start showing it off! Here’s a link to my post about the actual ring. Also, a big reason I went this route is because it’s much cheaper for a jeweler/designer like her to use prefabricated parts. I’ll end up spending only $500 for something that would probably cost around $1300 at a jeweler who would CAD design and cast the ring.

My Fiance designed my e-ring from stratch. It was a great experience for him – he got to pick out the exact diamond, saw the CAD and made changes to it, see the wax mold, etc. It took about two months. We’re designing my wedding ring now with the same jeweler and it’s very fun, I definitely can appreciate the craftsmanship much more now. I’d recommend finding a reputable jeweler who goes impeccable work and also is great at communicating with you throughout the process to guarantee the ring is exactly how you envisioned.

I love that my e-ring and wedding ring are custom, makes them that more special. It is not some mass produced rinhg that’s being churned out.  And I know for sure it is made with high quality materials and excellent craftsmanship. If you’re very detailed oriented like me, I’d highly recommend the custom route!
