Hubby and I decided to take his last name and both change our middle names to be our original names + my last name. I cant seem to find any info on how to actually do this though. Every web site I come across has different info one even saying we had to go to court….Anyone know how this is done? I am stressing! Thanks!

I think you go to the Social Security Administration

It will differ by state. You can’t go to the social security administration until you have paperwork documenting the name change. You likely will have to go to court and your husband will have to petition for a name change. Men can’t automatically change their name the way that women can when they marry.

It depends on the state. In CA, for example, the man can change his name freely on the marriage license/certificate. However, in MA, he can’t – he has to go to court.

@crayfish: We got the marriage certificate already and it has his new name on it- does this mean we are good?

@Mrs.Tillmann: Just a marriage certificate won’t cut it, as this won’t legally change your name. You will need to bring the marriage certificate to your local social security agency and have his name legally changed. I would call them first though and confirm that a marriage certificate is acceptable documentation for a middle name change for a man. If it isn’t, they should be able to tell you what you need to do.
