I’m not engaged yet but my SO has asked me to tell him what cut I want for the uncut aquamarine we found together and a bit about what setting I would like.
The problem is that I really don’t care too much for jewelry and we’re pretty broke as we’re saving up for a HOUSE in the next couple months! I’m throwing around the idea of asking for a plain $35 setting at the gem mining place with the plan that we buy a bridal set and have my aquamarine re-set before the wedding. What do you all think of this?
To me it makes sense because we’ll have more money when it comes time to re-set and then I’ll have more time to look, try stuff on, and possibly design what I would like with my SO instead of hoping he’ll find something good within our limited budget. We’ve been dating for over 6 years so we’re wanting to get engaged ASAP and married in 1 year. But, I’m also sad about it. What if he wants to surprise me? What if I don’t want to reset the stone because what he proposes with is sentimental?
Help me out here bees!! I need to e-mail him my preferences soon!

Well nevermind, I e-mailed my preferences. I didn’t suggest upgrading, but have mentioned it earlier so we’ll see what he decides!

I’m doing a similar thing and I think it’s so smart!! I’ve pointed my SO in the dirrection of rings ranging from fifty (litterally fifty) dollars to three hundred, and told him that if he spends more than three hundred we’re in a fight. lol. Because, for me at least, getting married is about a marriage, and not jewelry, and dresses, and flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I totally want all of those things, I’m just not going to put myself in a position where I can’t pay my mortgage because I just HAD to have gardenias, a string quartet, and a 2 karat ring. I’ll be just fine with handmade paper flowers, my sister playing guitar, and a vintage sapphire from etsy if I still have a roof over my head and my SO by my side not arguing with me about money troubles. If you really love the thoughtful proposal he comes up with, keep the ring! 35 dollar setting and all! Maybe 5 years from now you guys will be incredibly well off and you’ll change your mind, get some 2 karat diamond and you can wear the ring with the less expensive setting on your right hand to remind you where you’ve been (my sister actually did that!!).
