I had never heard of the “pay for your plate with a gift” rule. I am actually very shocked, not just by that but also the fact that people are paying $200+ pp for a wedding! We are getting married in 6 weeks and we are paying $30 pp and I thought that was a lot. Never once has the thought crossed my mind that I should expect large monetary or expensive gifts. I think it would be nice to have a small gift or even a card from all gifts so I would have something to remember them at my wedding, but because me and my fiancee have been living together for 5 years and have everything we need i’m not expecting anything at all. I’m just really excited that our friends and family will be able to celebrate with us (especially since it is during Memorial Day weekend and they are skipping their lake trip, etc. for us). If any bride is really paying $200 pp for their wedding and expecting gifts or money of equal or greater value then why don’t you just sell tickets to your wedding for $200? Or maybe even have your reception at an expensive resteraunt and let your guests foot their own bill? Atleast that way they have a choice on what they eat from a full menu and not just a choice from one or two options that YOU decided on.
