I’ve been going to kickboxing classes for a few months now and I really enjoy them. The classes have gotten me into phenomenal shape, and I can probably knock someone out if I really needed to.
Recently I’ve been thinking about taking some martial arts courses both for self-defense and continued fitness purposes.
Does anyone on here take martial arts? If so, what do you take? What do you like about it? I’m open to anything, and if there are any Bees on here who’ve done Krav Maga I would love to hear from you!

We use to do mui thai kick boxing (sorry for spelling mistakes) when we lived in Ontario with an incredible fighter. I miss it so much. I would do the womens class which was more like cardio kickboxing and not a real technique class and then go into the mens class which was so much more fun. We cant find a martial arts studio that we like all there is is shitty karate and stuff like that in our area.

I took karate for several years, at a dojo that started out as all women and was still predominantly women’s and only really stopped because I moved out of the area. I loved it. There was a lot of emphasis on self defense, but also on physical strength and health, with a very meditative approach. From what I can tell, martial arts training is very dependent on the approach of the place you take it, rather than the style or type of training. Oh, and I also built really good stretching habits during that time, and even though I now mostly just go to the gym, I know my body’s limits and strengths in such a way that I basically never hurt myself through exercise. It took me a while to realize that that isn’t the norm because I started doing karate in my teens!

I have a black belt in Karate and now do kick boxing. I love martial arts – it is great for fitness and for fun. The self-defence and self-dicipline that come along are just added benefits!

@naturalysam: That sounds awesome! My ex-BF was really into kung-fu and ended up living in Thailand for a few years to train as a muy thai (sp?) fighter. The level of training he went through is insane. I’ve been finding that many of the classes geared toward women are the more cardio/fitness variety as well. I’d really like to find a school that’s more focused on technique as well. How much were classes where you went?
@TankGirl: I agree, it’s been difficult to find around me that is focused on the arts portion as much as the fitness portion of martial arts. Ideally, I’d train with Mr. Miyagi a la Karate Kid.
@FMM: I could definitely use some more self-discipline! 🙂 Since you’ve done karate and kickboxing, would you mind if I asked you which one you prefer? (If you do prefer one over the other that is?)
