I take iron supplements for anemia. I’ve never had serious stomach irritation taking them but I eat BIG meals. My problem has been out the other end… 🙁

@AstoriaK:  I have this issue and constipation and black poo (tmi, i know!). I started alternating days where I would take them and increasing my fiber on the off days. Eventually my body got used to it and things seem to be better. Also perhaps ask if you can start with a smaller dose and work your way up.

I had to take them for a while after giving birth to my son.  Was supposed to take them for a year, year that only lasted maybe a few months. They made me sick. So stopped taking them.

I would ask your doctor what he recommends.

Can you try and eat something after dinner that might help? I know it is an “empty stomach” thing with iron… I am generally ok but I take mine before I eat so I am eating at that 15-20 min mark so I’ve never had an issue – granted I am only mildly anaemic so mine aren’t super strong ones… But I was thinking maybe if it is a food thing maybe eating just before you normally feel dodgy might help, a piece of fruit (apparently orange and grapefruit help with absorption) or maybe even a drink… Peppermint tea is good for digestion but not sure if it will help in this case… Hopefully someone that has similar effect can help more. 🙂

@AstoriaK:  good luck! Just be careful not to start eating too much fiber at once as it’ll cause bloating which is also incredibly uncomfortable!

I was diagnosed with anemia about a year and a half ago and I still have to take iron supplements. Sorry I can’t help you with the stomach thing. I never felt sick and it actually helped with my IBS.

I was diagnosed with anemia, and I started taking chewable iron pills.  I think the brand is Nature’s Path or Nature Plus?  I’ve never had an issue with contipation.  Good luck!

I take my supplements at night with a snack and then sleep on it so I don’t feel sick through the day.  There’s a liquid supplement called Floradix that’s for kids that I don’t find as hard to digest. It’s a bit expensive and you can get it at health food stores.

I am expecting, so I have been taking prenatals that contain iron.  The only thing that helps me is to drink a carbonated beverage- I like sparkling juice or sparkling water.  For whatever reason, it helps it to… kinda digest.

The other thing that helps for whatever reason is eating a grapefruit.

@AstoriaK:  I’ve never had a problem feeling sick with mine… but talk to your doctor about it. I know that if you’re having problems with constipation, they can prescribe you something to counteract that.

I took some a long time ago when I was severely anemic.  I’ve taken them sporadically recently and I have also felt sick to my stomach.  But I don’t remember feeling sick in the past (granted it was a long time ago, so I may have just forgotten).  I would really call and ask your doctor!
