I haven’t tried it but a good friend did a year or so ago.  She told me that you really need to stay away from cheeses and fatty foods or else you may experience really bad… bowel issues?  Like unexpected, explosive stuff.  Yuck.  Although, that’s a great deterent.  You’d probably lose more weight just being fearful of some leakage situation!  I’m still considering it too.

All I’ve heard is that it causes weird/embarassing/gross bowel situations as Jennifer mentioned above.

I have not tried this product, however, I am working on my Doctor of Pharmacy degree, and this product is sold in some of the pharmacies I have been in.

Basically, the medication causes you to REALLY think about what you are eating.  There are a lot of not-so-nice side effects that are associated with this medication, but they are much worse if you eat incorrectly (more than 15g of fat per meal) while on the medication.  Basically the medication prevents some of the fat from being absorbed in the intestines.

Two important points to consider: there have been reports of serious liver injury with people taking this medication, and the FDA is currently running a safety review.  Second, on the prescription strength version (Xenical), people lost approximately 6 pounds more in one year than with diet and exercise alone.  It’s not a miracle drug by any means.  It’s really important to consider if the side effects you will experience (diarrhea, gas with oily spotting, etc) is worth the extra few pounds.

Here is an easy-to-read website about the product.  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alli/WT00030

Hope that helps (and sorry if it’s TMI!).

I bought it but then returned it due to fear of the bowel issues. Thanks for the article.

I tried it.  I didn’t have the extreme bowel issues some people have, but I also really watched what I ate – what’s the point of taking it if you’re just going to eat bad food anyway?  I don’t think I lost any weight because of the pills.  While I took it for about 1.5 months and lost about 5 pounds, I probably could have done that on my own and eating well.
