(Closed) Anyone with a crazy venue story? Venue trying to rip you off?

We had a venue tell us that there was a $500 fee to do the ceremony at the same site as the reception. I asked what that got us, and she said “The right to do the ceremony here.”

Apparently their “ceremony only” fee was $1000, but if you booked both ceremony and reception you got a discount. But the venue didn’t do anything – we would have been responsible for set up, decoration, and breakdown, and the caterer (or us) would have been responsible for flipping the space between ceremony and reception setup. So… I guess I just didn’t get it.

I agree, I think they really just exist to try to take as much money off of you than they possibly can. I don’t think I ever visited ONE location where additional costs for something obvious or simple came up. My particular location charges a ceremony fee of $1000, which gets me 2 hours total, use of the gazebo, chair set up and pa system for the officiant. I’m having the reception on site, so you’d think they’d throw that in- nope! Also, they ran a special right before the end of the year which gave new contracs a free ceremony or a free hour. If they really cared and wanted future business referrals, they would have contacted people that had recently contracted and offered them the freebie. BUT that also goes to show just HOW MUCH they are charging for “nothing”. When you can charge someone one day for it, and give it away the next, you know it’s not a justifiable cost.

@islandbabes:  Oh! I forgot about another one! I was pricing out a caterer that we were looking at (before we decided on a restaurant venue) and was going through their catering documents. And right at the bottom was “add 15% for weddings.”  But they wouldn’t tell me what that extra 15% covered. AAAAAHHHH!

…fortunately those things weren’t too common. But they drove me crazy too!

I think your all inclusive plan sounds great! As few “moving parts” as possible, that’s makes this simpler.

We thought we had a place almost all settled in Europe…and suddenly theyadded on a 10 000 euro “exclusive venue charge”. Wtf???? That’s like most of our budget you crazy people!

Needless to say we began to look elsewhere…

Lol I wish I was joking. It came out of nowhere too lol, after we had been talking to this venue for at least a month. Their reasoning is because we wanted a smaller wedding at a venue that can hold more people….right. We asked if they would waive it if we got married during the week and they dropped it to 5,000 euros! Oh, thanks! Hahahaha.

I think some places are expensive just for the sake of being expensive!!!

We have now found a venue with no exclusivity charge. We will be the only wedding on the resort that day and we have the entire pool area overlooking the ocean reserved for our reception…alllllll night! It took 3 months of hard work to find this place but I believe it will all pay off in the end!

Bump? Think this was a great idea for a thread and would love to hear more! Might help others out by knowing what to look for before you book as well!

I’ve been speaking to a venue rep for over a month now about our wedding next year. Since day one, I told him I have an 80 person guest list. He quoted me a price and said I could choose between friday, sat or sunday for the same cost. He finally sent me a proposal today because he doesn’t book “over a year in advance” and the proposal said there’s a 100 person minimum on saturdays. wtf? He never mentioned that!!

I’m really annoyed right now. I just emailed him. Can’t wait to see what he replies.
