I don’t but have always thought that’d be a cool place to work. It’s a turning point for so many of the inmates and a low point for many. I guess it’d make you appreciate things and see a part of the population you might not encounter day to day. I’ve read some books by a professor at my alma matter, her name is Lorna Rhodes and she writes on the anthropology of prisons. It might be interesting for you if you do start working there.

My first year in law school we went on a tour of men’s central jail in LA.  We spent about 2-3 hours there.  I had nightmares for about a month afterwards and couldn’t sleep for days.  It was horrific. I pretty much vowed that I will do everything in my power to never end up there again, (even just as a civilian).

My ex (and still good friend) is a corrections deputy. Working in that environment can be a tough gig! At least you won’t have twelve-hour shifts and not see the light of day for months at a time like the officers! But, being surrounded by a law enforcement community can be interesting, to say the least. People in the field tend to stick together, although I don’t know how much they would include someone in your position into their circle. Should be a memorable chapter in your life regardless, I think! Best of luck!

My husband works at a prison. He started out with an admin position and still has an admin position although on a slightly higher level. Although he doesnt see prisoners all day long …

many prisoners DO work in admin buildings as helpers as well(under supervision). Of course these are the well behaved and trusted inmates.

Oooh, that sounds SO interesting to me. I love watching TV shows or movies or reading books about what goes on inside prisons.

Good luck!

I didn’t know if you meant ‘prison’ literally or metaphorically LOL!

My brother works in one. He’s worked there for a long time. Personally, it would freak me out even if they were female inmates, BUT I understand the necessity of it and I admire those who can do that work. I hope you get the job! 🙂

I haven’t worked in a prison, but I’ve had to visit prisons for my job (in social services). I was always just in the visiting area. I have to say, it wasn’t something I enjoyed.  Lots of disgusting cat calls, and looks.  I hated feeling “exposed” to that population.  Be careful!

i’ve never had to work in one, but i work at an HR solutions company and we’ve been placing a LOT of nurses at prisons… gov’t has put out a lot of money to stepup the healthcare provided for prisoners and these nurses get paid top dollar (as they should)… it’s ridiculous how popular it is!
