We have decided to write our own ceremony instead of following the normal script. My mother thinks I am crazy, but SO thinks it’s going to make our wedding that much more ours. So, who has or is going to wrote/write their marriage ceremony. Did you include anything special readings or funny jokes? How did your family react and if you have already gone through it, how did you guest like it?

I am writing our ceremony, although maybe not totally from scratch? I collected dozens of sample ceremonies from online sources, picked pieces that I liked from different ceremonies, cobbled them together, edited heavily and added some original things, too. I’m not completely happy with it yet – I keep going back and trying to make it sound more natural and not so stiff and formal – but I’m getting close.
And yes, I’m including some funny and personal things. For example, in our vows, along with the more serious promises, he is vowing to squash all bugs, no matter how big, and I am vowing to make him a snack whenever he is hungry and grouchy. We are also committing to love each other “para siempre” (Spanish for “forever”) because that is something we say to each other all the time. I think our guests will enjoy these personal glimpses into our personalities and our relationship. As a guest myself, I would much prefer to hear an original ceremony than the usual script that I can pretty much recite from memory by now.
I would be happy to share the document with all of the ceremony scripts I collected, and even my own, if it would help! Just message me.
It takes a lot of time and thought, but I think it will be worth it in the end!

We did it! Well we mostly wrote our own ceremony, save for the bible verse and ee cummings poem we had read. Our minister helped because she made us write our own vows anyway. We had funny moments in our vows. Our guests LOVED it, we got a ton of positive feedback about how the ceremony was beautiful, personal, etc. It took some work, but it was totally worth it!

We wrote our own too and our Justice of the Peace, who happens to be my Aunt, made her suggestions as well. I stole one part from a ceremony that I had heard, but other than that it’s all FRESH! lol. We are also writing our own vows as well. Should be fun 🙂

I just googled (humanist ceremony wording) and found parts of mine and threw them together. Not my own writing, but still not the same as others. I will go through and customize a bit more as well.

We did it too! We got so many compliments on it and people said it was one of the most personal and meaningful wedding ceremonies they had ever seen!
