My dog has been coughing for 5 nights after starting antibiotics and cough meds and it has defintiely gotten better. It used to be all night long, now it’s just 2 or 3 times at night. It mostly happens at night and when he gets excited. Dinner time? Perfectly fine. Priorities. LOL! How long did it last for your dog?
PS- am hoping that it’s nothing else and am not sure how long to wait it out. I don’t really have a regular vet because my dogs don’t normally get sick.

My pup had it once, but I can’t really remember how long it lasted to be honest. A couple of weeks? I’m a neurotic helicopter dog mom, so we took her to the vet (mostly because she also wasn’t eating…except for strawberry eggos *eyeroll* I have a diva). From what I understand, most vets recommend just letting it run its course, so I’d say you’re fine not going unless any other symptoms pop up.
How heartbreaking is that sad coughing sound though?!

ButternutPoppy : we had a dog with it once but in his case it wasn’t literal coughing. He had the runniest nose and spent his first couple of weeks in my bedroom. We waited it out and then cleaned all the puddles off the carpet. I think 2 weeks was all it lasted and no meds because it was gross but not a bad case.

Our puppy had it when we adopted him from the shelter. It was an extremely frustrating (and expensive!) case- took 4 10-day rounds of antibiotics (paired with cough meds for symptom relief) before he got better. Lasted about 2 months total. We gave him a teaspoon of coconut oil every morning and night and rubbed some super diluted thieves oil on his throat which also helped with the coughing. Poor guy was miserable though, which made us miserable.

ButternutPoppy : My dad’s 2 dogs had it! From what I remember it lasted quite a while (maybe a month or so), but it eventually went away. From my understanding, it’s kind of like when we get a cold or the flu. It eventually goes away but we can deal with symptoms like runny nose or a nasty cough for a while! Lots of water and rest! Hope your pup feels better soon!

Yep! My dog had it when I adopted her from the shelter. Cleared up in a week or two with antibiotics.

Thanks everyone! I guess I’ll wait it out a bit longer. The vet had given cough meds and then later antibiotics and said if it didn’t clear up in a couple days lets do a bunch of tests. And yes, he was so miserable for a few nights (so was I!). He’s fine otherwise. Thanks again!!

Yep my puppy had it when we adopted him and then again after we boarded him one time. Poor guy! He should be feeling better soon. It’s so hard to see them not feeling well!

Are your other pups vaccinated for bordetella? If not, I would quarantine the sick pup so the others don’t get it too!

ButternutPoppy : my doggy did!
At first the vet told us it was probably a cold because she had her shot. However we took her to a free clinic for her first shots (she wasnt our dog then, we just found an injured dog in a truck yard) and had her stuff done there, so its very possible she didnt get the shot?
anyway, we tried to brave it out for a few days, but the coughing and snot blowing everywhere was getting worse. She wouldnt eat or drink and then when i came home one day and all she could do was pick her head up (instead of racing to me like usual) we knew we had to take her to the ER vet.
They confirmed kennel cough and gave her an IV for hydration. They let her go the same night and gave us some antibiotics. It took about 3-5 days to notice a huge difference. Id say after a week or so she was pretty much back to normal.
Also we put tacos in pedialite to help her eat and stay hydrated. We tried all kinds of other food, but nope. Plain carne asada tacos dipped in pedialite worked haha.

Yep, both of ours have gotten it (from the vet’s play yard no less). I want to say it lasted 7-10 days or so.
We don’t vaccinate for bordatella any more unless we know we’re going to have to board them. They got it while vaccinated anyway.

Westwood : Ugh that sucks!! My dogs both got Lyme disease while having the Lyme vaccination 🙁 WTH!

I sent mine to the kennel for the weekend and all 3 came back with it!
The cough took about 2 weeks after medicine to run its course!
Come to find out the vaccine only covers certain strands of kennel cough so they are still able to get it.
We changed kennels right after that though!
Hope your pup feels beeter soon!!

ButternutPoppy : How old is your dog? And is the coughing only at night?

When I adopted my dog he had it also. It was awful because he was hacking up stuff everywhere and at first I had no idea what was wrong with him. Poor little guy was sick for over a month! It took two rounds of antibiotics for it to finally clear up.
