@allyfally:  Oh no, they just comment aloud about me.  Here’s the best one yet, the “bell ringer” was in the supermarket lobby/car area.  Women with her child working the S.A bell as a I pass without donating, “that Dy— isn’t going to give any money to charity.”  My response, “yay, S.A donates money so my girlfriend and I can’t get married.”  It actually is the reason I won’t donate to Salvation Army.  It’s mostly parents pointing me out to their children or under their breath “stupid L

” “fat D—-.”

I am always extra polite and usually say hi/bye/good morning or smile at their kids.  I don’t get upset, it’s sad in a way, but I also to some degree want their children to see me as their anti-stereotype.  I have a Master’s Degree, I work as a therapist, I am weeks away from birthing my first chid, I am an upstanding citizen in many ways so being friendly and agreeing w/ their comments is my subtle fuck you.  Let their kids have this image of a “stupid L

” driving the car she paid for, helping people, smiling and handing you the last shopping cart in the lot instead of the foul things these kids have been taught at home.

We are moving out of the state in May because we don’t want out son to be sorrounded by people like this.  I moved here to be with my husband- not my kind of place.

@allyfally:  Sadly, I know some people who think in the same way, though it is likely he just wanted to get a rise out of you by saying that.

I went to a liberal arts school, and even there I still encountered people who thought that because I wore a pixie cut for a few years, I must be a lesbian. I had a (tea party type) female fellow student ask me flat out if I was a lesbian, even though I openly talked about being attracted to men around our mutual friends. After I picked my jaw off the ground, I said no, and asked her why she would ask me that, she told me that it was obvious that I wasn’t really into guys because I had cut my hair very short, and not been in a relationship for a long time (I was working through other issues, not related to my sexuality, that were none of her business!). She then interrogated me about why I wasn’t dating anyone if I was straight!

I was astionished at the ignorance of that girl, and others like her, who attended my college. It was in a rural area in the south, so many of the in-state students were just like her. Ugh.

The funniest thing was, that about 6 months after I cut my hair into a pixie cut, that SAME GIRL who started rumors about me and told me I was a lesbian because of my hair…. got a pixie cut. What?

P.S. I hope you tell your SO about your new lifestyle change :p

I had some idiot delete me as a friend because I said I tried watching the show, and I hated it.  Sorry, not my kinda show.  And he said “Love that show. Bye!” and defriended me.  The moron is in his mid 40’s.  He must like that show a lot, I mean, A LOT if he’s going to take offense to me saying I didn’t like the show an all and delete me. Seriously?  immature.

@allyfally:  Seriously. That happened last night.  Complete DBag. If I deleted everyone that didn’t agree with me, have the same opinion as me or didn’t like what I liked, I wouldn’t have any friends or family on FB. LOL  I might start deleting people that like my posts.

^ Oh, and I should add to the above comment, that my own mother hated my pixie cut because she thought it would look like I was gay…. my parents are fundamental chrisitian crazies. I told her I didn’t give one shit if it “looked like I was a lesbian”, and that furthermore it was a ridiculous to make that assumption about a woman with short hair.

Everyone else I knew who was not a crazy fundamentalist or a homophobe, thought that my short hair was extremely flattering. I kept it for a few years before I got bored of it, and it was quite liberating not to care if people liked my hair. Almost everyone prefers long hair on women, and the consensus seems to be that if a woman CAN grow long, healthy hair, she WILL, or there is something wrong and “unfeminine” about her.

I didn’t know until I did so, but apparently the idea that long hair = beautiful in our culture is still VERY pervasive… and it is stupid, in my opinion. Some women look better with short hair, some women can’t grow long hair, and some just prefer it for ease of care. Stop telling them that “men don’t like short hair”! Oh, okay, so I’ll just make every decision about myself based on if a man would approve or find it sexy, or else I will never be able to attract one of them…. wait a minute, isn’t this 2013? I’m sure there are some men around who don’t think that way… and maybe even some who like women with short hair. in fact, I’m married to one. So glad he didn’t think I was a lesbian because of my short hair! *eyeroll*

The people who think like this are the same people who think that all feminists are lesbians, or at least in danger of “turning gay” if they aren’t already. I grew up in a community where there was lot of fear and ignorance, and very rigid gender roles/expression so I’ve heard it all.

@allyfally:  Congratulations! Now you have a legitimate excuse to do your own DIY and get that short haircut you have always wanted!

EDIT: LOL, I wrote that before I even read all the hair comments on this thread…

@MsBlackberry:  I was in the military and a woman who had very long hair cut it all off into a pixie cut.  IMMEDIATELY people started asking (behind her back and to her face) if she was a lesbian.  Never mind the fact that for several years they’d seen her with long hair pulled back into a braid or bun every day….nope, as soon as she cut off all her hair, lesbian!

People are ignorant jackweeds.
