I have an Apple TV, but it does not have any “channels” on it, per se, so I can’t comment on that.  I do not pay a monthly fee for my AppleTV.

It allows you to stream from Netflix, YouTube, etc. and watch content from your MacBook on your TV.  You can also listen to Internet Radio, shop ITunes, browse Flickr streams, etc.

@CanadianMermaid: You hook a AppleTV up to your actual TV, as far as I know.

Like @hotchildinthecity: , my apple tv doesn’t have channels or a monthly fee. What it does, is let me watch my iTunes library on my tv, rent movies from iTunes straight to my tv, and watch certain internet channels like youtube.

I would love my apple tv if it worked all the time. Unfortunately, it sort of randomly decides not to work sometimes. When it does work though, it’s very convenient!

Yeah, an AppleTV is not a TV. It’s a small box that allows your TV to play Netflix and YouTube, plus anything you’ve already got on your laptop.

@CanadianMermaid: No, it will not replace your everyday TV.  It is basically exactly like a Roku if you’ve heard of those.  If you’re subscribed to Netflix, you can access it.  Otherwise, you will have to pay for movies through ITunes.  I pretty much just use it for Netflix, YouTube, and streaming from my personal MacBook Pro.

As far as I know, there’s no such thing as “jailbreaking” an AppleTV.

It doesn’t have anything on it– you have to have an account with Netflix to watch the movies and shows that are on Netflix.  I wouldn’t use it to replace my cable?

I do pretty much the same thing just by plugging my laptop into my TV and using it as a monitor to browse the web– then I can watch Netflix on the big screen.

No, it doesn’t replace cable.  Just streams to your TV.  You can basically stream through netflix (you’d need an account) or something you buy off of itunes

@CanadianMermaid: I can’t imagine how you could get Netflix for free because you need a physical Netflix account.  “Jailbreaking” applies to apps being free/unlocked on an IPhone, which yes, is illegal and takes money away from the people who design the apps.

The Netflix app is already “free”/unlocked on the AppleTV…having it “jailbroken” would not help you get a Netflix account, which you would need to access any movies or TV shows.

So you’ll be receiving free purchases/rentals from ITunes?  I wouldn’t personally risk doing this, nor have I heard of anyone who has.  I guess it’s similar to the old days of black boxes and free pay-per-view.
