I’m not sure, but when I went to get mine, all I needed to take was my marriage license

@sienna76:  they’re talking about your marriage liscence, most likely.

Also, I had already gotten my name changed at the DMV before I did the SSA, so I had my drivers liscence with my new name, and my passport, school ID, and piece of mail with my name on it as well… just bring as many things as you can think of.

In my state the SS office is your first stop.  Marriage license has both names on it, as we were instructed to sign it with the names we intended to use post-marriage.  I had to go there first since the SOS (our version of DMV) checks with them to verify your name.  I did it the same day, just had to bring the receipt with me and got a new license with my new name.  When it came at the end of the week I scanned it and sent copies to all my CC cards, etc, and had all new stuff a month after the wedding.  Easy peasy.

ETA:  Marriage license has my given name at the top, then where we signed it our pastor told us to sign our “new” names (just I changed mine).  They didn’t even look that close, though – my new name matches his last name I think is all they looked at.

@sienna76:  I’m not sure, mine didn’t. It just had my birth name, and his birth name. And when I went to the SS office, I told them that I was taking his last name & they put in the request for it.

I brought my birth certificate and my marriage liscence (which had my maiden name on it). I had no problems, was in and out in 10 minutes.

@everalwaysrealtrue:  when I went to correct my driver’s license, they asked me for my marriage certificate and my SSN as proof of new married name. How did you manage to do it backwards?

to the OP, when I applied for my marriage license, I had to declare my maiden name and also my name post-marriage. Thus, my marriage certificate has both my maiden name and my new married name on it.

We didn’t have to sign our marriage license. So it was in my maiden name and I guess the new name is just his name. They took my marriage license, no problem!
