@s2bmrscook:  It really depends on how much detail they’re actually putting into the appraisal. For example, some places will take weights, grades, measurements, photos, etc of your piece and go very into detail. Other places however will be very vague and say “One 14k white gold 1ct solitaire ring” (for example). If you’re doing this for insurance purposes then you’re going to want to be very detailed so that if something somehow does happen to the piece then you have all of the information on it.

Insurance/written appraisals here are $100 an hour. It’s all based on time, not what the piece is actually worth. I don’t like places that charge you based on what your piece is worth.
