We’re having a church wedding, and the church charges $2,000 for the wedding service. Are we still supposed to give the officiant something? A gift? Cash? What would be appropriate? Our officiant is elderly and we do not know him well, if that helps any.

I believe you are still supposed to give the officiant something – in other words, cash – for his services. I would just go ahead and ask the officiant, or perhaps the church secretary, what the usual donation is. We asked our pastor’s wife – she indicated he generally receives about $150, although some people give more. They are also elderly, and she indicated that they prefer not to receive more, as it becomes a problem with their taxes and their social security. So we will probably also get them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, as he has spent a lot of time with us, and we really like them both.
