I gotta be honest, I’m a bit confused.  I live in an apartment complex and I have no problem going out to get the mail in socks, barefoot, or flipflops… Is there etiquette I’m missing on?  Do you live in a fancy apartment building?

@happyface:  Haha. I wear my PJs and flip flops to do my laundry… which is outside in the next building over. Unless you live in a ritzy area of town, I think you’re overthinking it!

I can’t imagine why anyone would object to flip flops??

I mean, if you are wearing pjs that are lace and see through, not so kind to your neighbors but I don’t get dressed up to pick up the mail or anything. You live there, no one is paying attention to what shoes you wear to get the mail.

I wear flip flops 24/7. No WAY would I put real shoes on to get the mail.

I also frequently wear PJs past 10pm to walk the dog. It’s late and I hope I don’t run into anyone.

I am pretty confused myself. I never notice anyones outfit or shoes when they are getting their mail.

I take the trash out in my pj’s all of the time. I also wear flipflops during the summer 24/7. So wearing them to get the mail would only make sense. I just never heard of this kind of etiquette I suppose.

OP, I can kind of relate to your post!  I live in a pretty nice high rise building in Chicago with a doorman, and I have some work colleagues who live in the same building.  However I’m fine with going downstairs in the lobby to get mail in my PJ’s, but only if they’re not skimpy or something I would be really embarrassed in if I saw a co worker.  I would NEVER go out in just socks or barefeet – I think that is gross!  But flip flops are fine by me!

As someone who walks around barefoot a lot… I have zero problem doing so to get the mail. Granted, our mailbox is right by our entry door so it’s not like I’m walking down the street to get it, but even so! I’ve gone out without shoes to throw garbage out.

LOL in my old apartment building there was a Keurig coffee maker in this little alcove across from the leasing office. I lived on the first floor, so I used that Keurig to make coffee almost every morning. I treated that alcove like it was my kitchen — PJs, slippers, messy hair, you name it!  If anyone was offended by this, they never said anything!

Uhh… what? Why does it even matter what kind of footwear you sport to the mailbox? I think you’re looking too far into this.

Not sure why this is on a wedding forum BUT.. who cares?  Put what you want on your own feet.

@happyface:  Ah, ok. I can kinda see where you’re going with this. My grandmothers old condo in Manhattan was like that. Very snooty. But yea, flip flops are fine. If someone has an issue with your footwear then they can shove it.

@Jamiezilla:  There’s all sorts of random stuff on here. WB is far from just about weddings anymore.
