I’ve been posting a lot, sorry Bees!
But, like the title says, are acrylic nails tacky? I have thin, brittle nails and have a hard time growing them out. I heard that gel nails were better for your natural nail so I went into the salon and asked for a gel set. I didn’t realize until I got home that the salon actually gave me acrylics and then put a gel coat on top. I’m pretty upset about it. I know if I try to take them off now, my nail under will be pretty messed up and might not recover before the wedding. The salon I went to had really good reviews, so I’m a little confused how I managed to mess up so bad. If I keep them, I’ll probably go to another salon for a fill.
What would you do? Keep them on until after the wedding? Or do they look too icky and fake?
Also, can someone explain gel nails to me? Are gel nails only the color you get in a no chip? Or are they like acrylic in that they cover your natural nail/tips and make it tougher? I think my lack of knowledge probably contributed to my not getting what I want

They look nice. I’d just leave them on for now.
Thry have different types of gel. They have a gel POLISH and they have gel NAILS. Gel nails being the more permanent. They are similar to acrylic nails but put on by a different process.

I don’t think your nails look tacky. They look fine to me.
Gel is a polish that you get put on. The nail techs will buff/scratch your nail, put a bottom coat on, the color, and then a nail harder which will reduce chipping and toughen the polish so it feels like acrylics. Then, you’ll put your hand in a UV machine which hardens the entire thing. It lasts between 10-21 days, depending on how careful you are.
I’m not sure if either are better for your nails because they both require the tech to buff/scratch your nail so the color sticks better. My nails looked terrible after I got gel done, so I only gotten it done once, but I know friends of mine that can’t look at how badily their nails look without gels so they continue to get them done.

I think your nails look great. That being said I used to be big into acrylics and now I prefer gel. I feel like there is less damage to your nail beds if done and removed correctly. But I think your nails look very nice as is.

Some acrylics look cheap and very obviously fake, but yours look really lovely and quite natural. As far as I’m aware, a “gel set” at a nail salon = set of fake nails, but “gel manicure” = gel polish that doesn’t chip and looks like regular nail polish, just shinier. Keep these for now, your hands aren’t even going to show up that much in pictures and I’m sure nobody will even notice.

Normally I’d say yes – acrylics are pretty gross and terrible for your nails. However, yours look pretty nice, and being a September wedding myself, you gotta roll with your nails at this point. It’ll take too long to take them off and regrow. Besides, your nails do not look tacky at all – you can hardly tell!
Gels are my go to. It’s essentially a tougher paint for your nails, it’s not a new nail, so to speak. I get gels, and it strengthens my nails to grow out for longer. I’ve hit and smacked my nails with the gels on, and they don’t break the way they would’ve with zero paint.

I also have brittle nails and have been doing gel manicures for a few years now. My nails now always lok great, but I get them done every two weeks. They don’t chip and i’m fairly rough on mine. Like, acrylics, if you take the gel off yourself is can totally screw up your nails. I’m not a fan of acrylic nails, bu I do think yours look really nice. I would keep them on a few weeks and then switch to just gel.

I think yours look very nice. I do acrylics with gel polish every 2 weeks and love it. My nails are very brittle and short and I also tend to pick at cuticles when I’m stressed so this prevents that from occurring.

I get a gel manicure every 2 weeks. They always last the whole 2 weeks for me (I could go longer, but I get bored). I don’t care for acrylics, not because I think they’re tacky (they look fine), but because they absolutely destroy your nails. I try to avoid them, but…
This is my current gel mani. The nail on my pointer finger actually has acrylic with gel over it, because I broke off the corner of my natural nail. All the rest are just gel.

I hate acrylics because they ruin your nails and usually look pretty tacky. I do have to say yours do not look tacky though.

I love your nails! They look so pretty and that color is amazing 🙂
Thats kind of what I thought? I’ve had gel polish before and it’s still chipped after a few days, but I thought there was actually a gel nail option that applied similarly to acrylic but the product was different (a gel and not the liquid/powder) and cured with a UV light instead. I’m so confused.
Thanks for all the advice ladies! I’ll probably just do gel polish in the future and be really careful where I go!

I cannot wear gel on mine. It chips after only a few days like yours. It depends on the individual’s nails and I think it has something to do with the oil in your nails. For some reason, it can cause the gel not to adhere as well. I think your acrylics look great.
Also, FWIW, I had a gel mani that ruined my nails similar to acrylic. I think it really depends on the salon and the individual.

that would make sense! I was so disappointed with my gel polish. I can’t wear regular polish for more than a day or two before it starts to chip, and the gel only lasted a day or two longer. First I saw it start to crack (not pretty) and then it chipped. I might just need acrylics.
