My boyfriend and I are currently designing a ring together and the process has been pretty frustrating… the renders that we are getting from the designer are pretty heinous. They look clunky, heavy and not at all pretty. For example, the pics attached are supposed to be like the Tiffany Novo setting. We are freaking out that the designer just isn’t hearing our desires and is going to be difficult to work with… Or, maybe the ugliness is just an artifact of the render and the actual design is going to be pretty?
Have you designed a ring and were you given a CAD render before? Do you have the actual ring? Please share your stories and pictures, we are gathering all the information we can!
Oh and the render has an oval diamond because that’s the stone we chose! A little different than the stone that comes in the Novo.

Here is the render design, hopefully this pic will show a little bigger.

My render was pretty close to what the ring turned out to be…the only thing was it was “dull” and the jeweler said “imagine this but sparkly…” It came out just like a shined up version of the render. If you aren’t happy with the render, they should be able to keep tweaking it until it is right. if not, you might consider a different jeweler.
Also, are you going with yellow gold? That will drastically change the look of the ring so if you want the look of the de novo you might think about white gold. It’s going to make the overall ring much brighter.

Hi Foofie thanks for your reply! I’m worried that the CAD render looks a little blocky, glad to know that should be resolved before they grow the wax model.
I think I will go with yellow gold because I love the idea of a simple gold wedding band. I also like mixing metals but know that I can’t have a gold band with a platinum band. I’d like to have the diamond set in platinum and actually hope to have a three stone setting so that most of the metal you see is platinum but the band is yellow gold. I don’t like the way the metals look in the render either.
Do you have any pictures of your finished ring and the render? Are you happy with how yours turned out? I’d love to see if you’re willing to share!

Darling Husband and I are CAD certified, so I have lots of CAD renders- the ring should look almost exactly similar. The program cuts the wax, and that render is made from the vectors that determine the actual cutting. It should look the same!
Oh- I see- the ones from your jeweler just look a little off. Hmm. Like he did a poor job cropping them or something :/

Where I’m getting my band made, they showed me pictures of previous custom designs, step by step. So the sketch, then the CAD, then the wax, then the ring. That has helped me sort of gauge the 2D moving into 3D. Maybe your jeweler can show you some other projects as samples?
