Supposedly there are universal scientific standards of beauty, but I still think beauty is incredibly subjective. Personally I have always been more physically attracted to women than to men, so if I had to choose I’d say women.

@Mimoza:  I am not too big on generalizations either. There are plenty of women who ARE naturally beautiful. It also varies from culture to culture on how grooming habits work. For example, hairy armpits on the ladies are considered normal in some places. There’s also a difference in what us ladies in North America do grooming-wise. Some don’t pluck their eyebrows or wear makeup ever. I agree that most women look better with some makeup… just like most guys look best with a clean shave and a nice haircut.

If we all let ourselves be completely natural, we’d end up looking a bit like cave people lol. Especially the men… imagine the long beards, long hair, etc. I think women actually might have the advantage since at least we don’t have much facial hair haha.

It’s also what we’re used to. Men used to wear high heels for example. If men were the ones who started wearing makeup back when it was first invented, your ex would be saying that women are the better looking ones (by his logic).

So I guess in a nutshell it’s a bit of a complex issue. I’d agree that men take less long to get ready/be presentable, but I wouldn’t say that they’re better looking than women.

This reminds me of a lecture I had in AP Biology.  Birds are the opposite of us; the males are the ones who get two of the same sex chromosome.  And male birds are the prettier sex – they always have pretty, colorful feathers!  Women are the prettier sex because we get 2 X chromosomes.

On looks alone, the prettiest gal will always be more pretty than the most handsome man.

Darling Husband would say I’m more naturally beautiful than he is; I’d say he is more naturally beautiful than I am.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I’m attracted to men, and not attracted to women at all (sexually), so I would say men are more beautiful, but I think most men would say women are.  Interesting question, though.

I think women are better looking than men. I don’t know too many straight men that are attracted to other men but I know a ton of straight females that are attracted to other females.

Even when women aren’t looking their best they often still look fantastic! We just have more things to worry about like long hair that get’s tangled when we sleep. Not all men but most men take a shorter route to be ready which doesn’t make them more beautiful it just makes them faster to leave the house (things like having short hair that’s easy to manage and not shaving their legs).

Now as far as shaving… we don’t have to, we want to. If everyone stopped all of the sudden everyone would just get used to it… men and women. That can also be said for men, some women don’t like hairy men and they have as much upkeep as a woman would.

@Mimoza:  Totally in the eye of the beholder. I don’t think that question can be answered.

What your friend said doesn’t make sense. The fact that men don’t go through the same beauty routines as many (not all) women is only meaningful if the end result is equal – ie, if you take one man and one woman who are considered equally good looking, and the woman has dyed and carefully styled hair, tweezed eyebrows, and a full face of makeup, then you could argue that that particular man is naturally better looking than that particular woman. However if the woman is better looking than the man as a result of her interventions, then you can’t really make that argument. Furthermore, not all women wear makeup and dye their hair. Personally, I think the average woman in my age range is better looking than the average man in my age range and I think that would probably still be the case even if you discounted makeup and other beauty interventions. One thing is that I think men need to work out at least somewhat to have a really attractive body, but a woman can “naturally” have a really attractive body without doing anything in particular to achieve it.

With regard to your second point, I think that once you get used to looking a certain way beacuse of makeup and styling, you can react negatively to seeing yourself without that. However that doesn’t mean that “natural you” is unattractive (or less attractive than your partner). I didn’t wear any makeup until recently, and I’ve started wearing mascara pretty regularly, and now I find that I look kind of faded without it, but I never thought I did before, and the reality is I didn’t. It’s just that I’m used to seeing myself with mascara now.

Artistically-speaking: men.  The ideal male physique has always been the ideal, period, because of its lines, angles, and so forth.  On an individual basis, however, I would say that few men, and, for that matter, few women, have “ideal” bodies/faces.  Women have to work to make themselves more attractive, it’s true, but there are men who work to look better, too.  Of course, a man with the right materials will generally require less grooming than a woman with equal materials (hairy pits and legs, anyone?), but this is also because of our standards for beauty differing between men and women.

as men get older, most of them are still very attractive where the same can’t be said of most of us women, at least in my eyes

@dlbaqua:  Ooh, good point. I think I’d have to agree that men age better.
