My Fiance and I just received our pocketfold invitations today, he didn’t want to spend the money on secondary envelopes. I am wondering if it is more proper to have secondary envelopes for the invitations to go into. Some etiquette sites say yes, some say no and it doesn’t matter. We are getting the envelopes calligraphied but if we did another envelope, those would need calligraphy also. So are they necessary?… 🙂

I looked this up when I was making invitations, because I didn’t know that second envelopes were a thing until after I made my invites up. O_o. It’s a tradition that dates back to times when the mail would be covered in dirt from transport, and the servants would take out the nice, protected inner envelope to deliver to the lary of the house so she would not interact with road dirt.
So, unless you’re sending your invites by horse to people with servants, it doesn’t seem necessary.
