The dresses are not super formal and a tux is, well, formal.  That said, I think it would be ok.  If you do a grey tux it would be even better as it would go great with those colors.  If he is set on wearing a black tux he should get it, it’s his wedding too.  That is my humble opinion.  Either way you will all look great.

I see that your fiance was thinking of a black tux, have you considered a gray tux?  Men’s Wearhouse now has two gray tuxes, one of them is an awesome style by Vera Wang, and they would match your Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses really well.  I find that gray doesn’t seem so formal.

I think a tux might be too dressy for the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses and for outside…

I think a tux is totally fine personally. Maybe do a regular tie instead of the bow tie?

What if your fiance wore a bow tie, but the others wore a regular tie? It allows him to get what he wants and stand out, but dresses down the others.

Can’t your Fiance wear a black tux and have the groomsmen wear something less formal (ie suit or shirt and tie)? I don’t think it’d look bad because it makes sense for the groom to be more formal than the rest, especially if you are wearing a fancy wedding dress.
