I’m taking his – not changing my name was never even an option in my mind.

We’re still talking about it, but I think I’ll be hyphenating my name.

I have a very very uncommon last name, there’s only maybe a dozen of us in the United States. His name is the exact opposite, extremely common.

I like being the only “Abby [my last name]”.

If I were “Abby [his last name]”, there would be hundreds if not thousands of people sharing my name.

I originally wanted to keep my name, but he didn’t like that. So I think the hyphen is going to end up being our compromise.

Oh yes! I’m changing my entire name, somewhat. I’m moving my middle name to my first name, dropping my first name, and using a new middle name. And of course, I am using his last name. I am already legally married, so I guess I am going to have to go through a more in depth route of changing my name.

Definitely keeping my name, with FI’s full support. How his family will take the news is another story…

I am a little sad, but I am changing my last name. I would be even more sad if we had different last names. I am not fond of his last name, because it is a very generic last name, and my last name is very not generic.

I changed mine. I did it after we bought our condo, so all of our condo stuff is in my maiden name. Our real estate lawyer said it wasn’t a big deal. I really like my married last name. It looks good with my name and sounds nice. A year and a half later, I’ve gotten to the point where it’s become natural to write my married name now instead of my maiden.

I added his–I have 2 last names now. it’s like I hyphenated, except with no hyphen. I kind of wish I had hyphenated it because it’d be easier for some things, but I wanted the flexibility of going by just his or my name socially; like if someone calls me “Ms. Maiden” they’re still right, or if they call me “Mrs. Hisname” they’re right too, though what I prefer is “Ms. Maiden Hisname”

@noritake22: Paypal was the worst. I haven’t switched it yet because it requires faxing or sending marriage license off to them. I finally switched my student loan over to my married name. It was easier than I expected. For some of the things, it really was a hassle, others it was easy.

I took my ex’s last name and now have a very awesome and cool (and totally unique) last name in my area.  So, my Fiance said to keep mine since his is “not as cool”.

Not sure where that falls since I did take my ex’s and not taking my husband-to-be’s.

I’m changing mine. I don’t feel particuarly connected to my last name and my FI’s is nice enough. I don’t see it as a big deal, just a way to identify yourself, the only reason not to change it for me is hassle, and since I know it will make him happy, why not?

Nope, and DH didn’t care either way. I like my name, it’s attached to both my degrees, and not taking my husband’s name doesn’t make us any less married or any less of a family, so I see no good reason to do it.

I’m contemplating either hyphenating or just adding his name and having two last names. He really wants me to keep my name so we will see.
