I have no reason to keep my last name. My identity doesn’t change with a new name. It is just a name in that respect. But even more, for me, the ability to really become ONE. Not two seperate people one two seperate names but one single family. I dunno… I wouldn’t change that.

No, I did not change my last name… nor did I ever really consider it.

I have established myself professionally, and I didn’t want to go through the confusion of suddenly having a different last name.  I like to keep my personal life and business separate.

Also, my family name is very unique.  Literally everyone who has my last name is related to me in some way or another due to my great-grandfather changing his last name when he came over.  I’ve found other people with my same last name on facebook and each time we’ve been able to determine exactly how we’re related.

My hubby has never really been upset by me keeping my last name, and understands why I did it.   Now we get to have a little laugh when people call him Mr. (mylastname)

@brox: awww….PayPal. Yes, I just contacted them and you are right. You have to jump through hoops with them. I have to wait until I get my legal driver’s license and a couple of other things with my legal name before I can change my name with them. It is a royal pain, but at least the person I talked to was nice.

@DCSquared: Haha my new last name starts with an S and ends with an S and I can’t do those in cursive either. I can get away with doing the first S in just a pretty scroll but I cannot figure out what to do with the last S.

I also should add that my current last name isn’t very common (Fricke) and definately frustrating to get people to pronounce and/or spell correctly. Seriously! Frickle? Friker? I mean, come on people! And yes, you do pronounce the E and no, it is NOt Freaky. The I is short. Like, Janie Fricke.. Ugg. So, While my family is very proud of the last name, I will be more than happy to become a Shef. Even if I do still have to spell it so people don’t put Chef and even if people do seem to want to add an extra L to make it Shelf. Oh well! I will still be a proud Mrs. Shef!

@Mrs Hedgehog: Your identity doesn’t change with your name, but changing your name makes you a family? I’m missing your logic here somewhere.

I’m hyphenating, so I’ll have my First Original-New for work/edu, and our friends can all call me Mrs. New. So, sort of both?

@linguo42: Same. Having the same name really isn’t a defining characterisitc of a famimly unit. It would be one of my last concerns in nuturing the family “feeling”.

I grew up always thinking that I would change my last name when I got married. I never realized how attached I was to my current common ho-hum surname (Smith) until I had to seriously think about dropping it. After thinking long and hard about it, I decided that I will keep my last name. It’s such a bit part of my identity and who I am. I also hate filling out paperwork and waiting in lines, so to me it seems superfluous. Maybe I would have a different opinion if my guy’s last name (Brown) wasn’t as common or ho-hum as mine.

Hyphenating.  If I don’t it will be first name, middle name=leigh, last name=lee.  I DO NOT want the same middle and last name (my middle name is the feminine version of his last name).  He hates the idea, but I don’t care.  And, I don’t want my current last name as my middle name.  Plus, my dad died the weekend we got engaged (never got to tell my dad I was getting married), and I don’t want to lose him any more than I have.

I have posted about this before, but DH took my name and we are super happy with it.  His Grandma had made up the name he had- so now he has a local German name and feels much more comfortable with it.
